Removing floor drag chain on spreader

I have a New Idea 12A manure spreader that needs the floor boards replaced. Is there a way to seperate the drag chain links without damaging them in order to make it easier to replace the flooring? I"ve been told you can replace the boards without removing the chain but it seems it would be much easier if the chain was out of the way, especially since I"m doing this myself without any "extra" hands. Thanks

Like broomstacker says- the tool is a flat chain detacher- made of cast iron- should be in any farm store. Otherwise, use a chisel to punch it apart, with a thick flat iron behind the chain, against the spreader box.

Does this bring back memories. Yup That's the way and if you broke one side that's the way you get a new one in after you fork the load off by hand. This happens much more when it's -10 and a good wind. lol

Loosen the chain up as much as possible, the front sprokets should slide back to do this. Then kink the chain so the slot on the underneth side lines up with the next link, and drive it out. You will need to have something to buck it with, as you drive it out.

We used to have a hand tool that had 4 or 5 different sized slots in it to grip and back up flat chain links to do just what you're saying. I would think flat link chain manufacturers would still sell such an item??
