What brand plow should I get?

Hi everybody, I'm shopping around for a 2-16 or 3-14 moldboard plow. The tractor that i'd be using it with is a MF 135. My soil has no to little clay occasionally wet - mainly to turn some sod over and plow under the garden.

Does anyone have any recommondations for a brand and model that has good parts avaliblity? I was looking at Deere, Fergie/MF, Ford/Dearborn, and Oliver/White, but I know that some tractor companies 'outsourced' some of their implements to other competitors and branded them under their own names so I have no clue who is good.

As a kid my dad had a Ford Dearborn 2-16 that i remember (which was later stolen). So I gotta start from scratch this year for the first time in 13 years.

Thanks

Christos

I have a set of Ford 101's..3-14"s, with brand new shares, shins and moldboards. You bring that 135 down and if it will pull them, I'll give'em to you! But, take my advice and save your gas money down. My opinion is, you're pushing it with 2-16's and a 2-14's would be about right, no way you could go wrong with a single 16". When these 3-14's are socked in this heavy clay we have here in eastern Kentucky, my 4 wd 64 horse JD knows they're back there and it ain't no cake walk. No need in overloading your tractor, too much plow is hard everything...especially the clutch. I'd rather make more passes with an easy pulling plow than work the innards out trying to pull more than your tractor can handle. You'll even make better time pulling less plow.

There are several plows that I like, and have, which include an old Ferguson-Sherman, a couple old David Browns, and a couple Kneverlands. The Kneverland model AB is my production plow. Something like an old MZ with 2x14's I think would be enough for your 135. I've seen a few guys around with the 135's and it's successors trying to pull more, and they have an awful hard time in our medium soil. I'm not saying you couldn't handle 3x12's, but I sure wouldn't tell you to go for it. I don't know if Kneverland's were popular in your area or not. I can say that they are one of the best plows in the world. They pull easily, and have high quality wear parts which are still well supported. The biggest problem with the others that I mentioned is parts availability. They were nice old plows; especially the Ferguson Sherman. They just aren't supported anymore. That's why I suggest the Kneverland MZ, probably with a hydrien body. They were very common in Eastern Canada. Downside is that they are more popular and pricey.... The old Massey's that you mentioned would probably be a ~$100-200 plow in my area. Mabey more, mabey less, depending on how good they are. Good luck.

I went to a local used equipment dealer, and saw two plows I liked - a Ferguson 14A and a Massey-Ferguson 72.

I didn't ask on a price but the MF 72 is a 3 bottom - obstenstively 14 inch bottom that has no paint on it left and some pitting on the structural members but, I figure for a plow that is almost 50 years old its doing ok.

The Ferguson 14A is 2-14 or 16 and has its paint but both I would automatically replace the moldboards and shares, etc. Both had their tailwheels intact.

What should I offer for them? I'm leaning towards those two because I can drive the tractor over there and pick it up as opposed to having someone drive it 10 mins to my house and pay hauling charges.

Thank you all very much for you advice thus far.

Christos

I have a two bottom 12" Dearborn and my 135 does a pretty good job with it. In tough ground I still don"t have enough traction to pull it extremely deep, but who needs to plow that deep anyway? I know from my experience that although the engine and drivetrain of the 135 could handle more plow, the weight and traction issues would make things a nightmare.

Massey Ferguson made a good plow. Model #66 were the saftey trip models available in the day of the 135. 12" bottoms are getting hard to find parts for. (shares and moldboards)

Ford plows (model 101"s) are great little plows. Same with the 12" parts though. 14""s and 16""s are easy to get parts for.

Deere plows pull like they"re tied to a tree. Older 415/416 models are relatively cheap. Models F35 and 45 are better plows. Older ones use HSS bottoms. Newer use NU bottoms. Good plows, just pulls hard.

Oliver (White) if you can find them do pull easier. (or so I"m told)

Best bet, find a model 101 Ford. Plentiful, lower cost than some, and they do a good job.

I"d like to see a 135 pull a 3-bottom plow in most conditions. I"ve got a 150 Massey (same engine/tranny, but more built-in weight, longer wheel base) I use a 2X14" Massey Ferguson model 66 plow. They pull easy even in our hard clay soils. I TRIED to pull my cousins 3X12" Ford plow over the weekend. It wasn"t a pretty scene. Anything over 5" deep, and she stopped the 150 in it"s tracks. Couldn"t get past low/3rd. (2X14""s pull easy in high/1st, 3/4 throttle)

An MF 135 wouldn"t pull more than 2-14s here . . . but might there. Anyway, IH 420 was a good plow, and was made in the sizes you want, with parts readily available. Later model Fords were made by Oliver, also have good parts availability. (Some say the Oliver bottoms pull easiest.) Not sure on MF plows, stay away from A-C and Case because aftermarket parts are for them are not as numerous and OEM is either not available or really expensive. JD F45 plows are also good. F35 (shearpin instead of trip) will work if you don"t have rocks.
