Are the Ford 540 Balers any count?? What are the good things about them? What are the bad things? I have found one that has been in a shed for many many years. I could have it pretty cheap. Any info would help. Thanks. Kyle

Like Jim said, the old Ford's are not that common anymore, and that doesn't help the parts support. I have a 532, which was a pretty decent machine in it's day. I did some adjustments on it last summer, got some stuff bent back into shape, and I've got to admit, she made some bales once it started to tie. It just took a while to get the first one tied. On the parts side, in simple terms, from what I've experienced, the parts that seem to be available are the outsourced parts that Ford got from other suppliers. Anything that relates to the baler's body/structure is NLA. Most knotter parts, knives, bearings, driveline parts, pickup fingers and that type stuff are supported.... so far. Parts is probably the biggest downside. Our 532 probably made over 100,000 bales before it needed a lot of attention, and then it was mostly common knotter stuff. The plunger bearings, guides, knives, and feed fork blocks were done around 200,000. So we're not owed a whole lot by it. Also, like Jim said, it was a faster baler than the Massey the we also had before it..... In the end though, I think if you want a Ford for nostalgic reasons, then go for it. If you want a working baler, that's going to see a lot of use, then you might want to look elsewhere. The old thing will be expensive to maintain at best. Good luck.

Rod

Thanks for all the replies. I would have the baler to put up less than 500 bales per year. Mainly just as a hobby thing, but also because we feed some to our cows. Thanks. Kyle

Not many people use the old Ford blue balers, but there are a few of us. Mine is a 542 which I got for free 'cause it "got to be unreliable". After some new bearings, some adjustments and some cleanup, it works fine. I know it will eat up a windrow a lot better than the old MF 124 I had before.

Jerry D is really the expert on the 530 and 540 Ford balers. I'm not real clear on what the differences are between them and the newer 532/542 balers. He'll be along sometime soon to give his input.

Probably the best thing about the old blue Ford balers is you can usually get one very very cheap.
