IH 100 Balanced Mower

I need some information on this mower. Was it a good one to use? Any problems I need to look for. I plan on cutting a field with it later on in the summer. It is a 3 point hitch. I would like to construct a caddy for it to pull behind a Farmall A if possible.

I don't know anything about that particaular mower model. What I DO KNOW is that for ANY 3 point hitch mower to convert for pull type you would be way in over your head. First your tractor does not have hydrolics on and you would have to get that first, then you would have to make a cart with a working 3 point hitch because that is the only way 3 point hitch mowers raise and lower then you would have to make a PTO shaft with a front of toung mount bearing with universal joint in front to let you turn. To get everything to work would cost you if you had to buy any new parts $1,500 up plus all your labor. Find a mower with either hand lift or clutch lift.

Check the implement photos, type in 100 in the search box. I posted several photos of the 100 mower including the trailer model. It looks like it would be a pretty simple converson. RJJ gave you a good desciption of what to check, but I would add one more. Examine the heavy belt pulley on the balance head for cracks. They have been known disintegrate. If you see any cracks try to get them welded up before it comes apart and pieces get lost, very difficult to find a replacement. "The voice of experience!"

IH balanced head mowers are very good. Check the wobble box for any play. With the pin in and attached to the knife, turn the drive pulley to see how much free play is on arm that drives the knife. A little here is ok. Remove the drive belt and try to wiggle the large pulley. There should be no play here. Remove the pin that drives the knife and check the arm for any vertical play. Very slight play here is allowable. If there is any major amounts of play in any of these areas, then plan on rebuilding the wobble box.

You did not say how long the bar is. With hard use the 9 foot bars have a habit of breaking off right at the point where it meets the wobble box. You may need to remove the grass shoe to inspect this area, but if you do BE CAREFUL. The bar will no longer attached to the wobble box at this point. It could fall and injure someone.

Check the breakaway casting. Look around the support for the vertical pin that the lift linkage pivots around. This casting can crack after too many hard acres.

Too bad I live so far north (125 miles NW of Winnipeg, Manitoba). We have the carcus of an old 100 pull type here. Would be a snap to convert 3 point type to a pull type.

Thanks for the information so far. I will check the areas you wrote about. I would like to find a way to pull it with my farmall A. I have a picture of a pull type that is for sale on ebay. I thought I would build something like it and put it to use.
