Want to use to dig holes for planting trees during spring and fall in northern Michigan U.P. Some rocks, good topsoil and grass. What brands and types are suggested? Anyone used Leinbach?

Joe,

I have a Leinbach post hole digger that I use on my Ford 2000 tactor in Middle Tennessee. We have very hard-packed clay about 8 - 10 inches below ground level. My tractor does not have any downward pressure on the 3-point hitch. I have a six inch auger that is not double-fluted.

My digger works well in the Spring time when the ground is still damp from Winter rains, but doesn't work worth a hoot in the late summer or early fall when the ground is dry and hard.

I don't know if another brand would work better or not, but if I had it to do over again, I'd certainly buy a double-fluted auger to see if it would get a better bite in the hard ground.

we use danuser hard to beat we have an extra one for sale now that has a 16 inch tree plant auger for 600.00

I use a Farmstar model 500 on my 49 Ford 8N. I have drilled a lot of post holes and planted a lot of trees with a 14" auger.

I bought one from TSC.....9" auger..... Works better in wet conditions like Tom said. I've had to replace the cutters and tip a couple of times as it doesn't cut good when dull. I bought mine for "occasional use", and I've had no problems with the unit. I would not consider it "well made", but for no more fencing than I do it's ok.

I have a TSC model too - Had to modify it slightly so that the crane lifted high enough to keep the auger from dragging on the ground on my Farmall 200, with 3pt conversion. My results have been excellent. Have downpressure, but have never had to use it. Only thing is to keep sod from collecting on the cutting edges, when you start the hole. 9" auger will make holes for all but the largest of cedar posts. (Home grown & cut.)
