best chopper for the buck

hey everyone, i was wondering what to do. ive got a jd 38, with no heads. ive got a lead on a new holland 770 with 2 row corn and a pickup head for a few hundred bucks. i can get three jd pickups for about the same, that would make one. I have no intrest in row crops so the 2 row head doesnt matter much.id like to chop sorgum-sudan, oats and grass for silage. what is the better way to go? thanks, nate

I've worked on JDs, Gehls and New Hollands. I own a NH 782 1000rpm and have owned a 718 and a 770, they are all good machines. Most small choppers can be had for low bucks as most farmers want big pull type or self propeled units. My suggestion would be to find a 1000rpm machine if you have that capability and stay away from Fox and other off brand choppers unless you know you can find parts. Check conditon of knives, gear box and throat for wear, these are the big $ parts and when they wear out the machine is often traded in.

We used to run a NH 718 and I've been around a JD 38 a little bit. I'd say the NH 717/718 would be pretty comparable to the JD 38 you have now. We used a JD 3950 chopper for a few years, personally I like the JD hay head better and the NH corn head.

I guess that is one of those 6 of one and a half dozen the other things. Although I would probably take the New Holland. We used to have a NH 717 that I really liked. I think that the John deere is probably just as good depending how much work you have to do to make the 3 heads into one that works.
