Indian corn and pumpkin planter

Hi all. I'm new (REALLY new) to small-scale farming and am interested in planting a few rows of pumpkins and indian corn...more than I'd like to by hand. What do you guys suggest as far as equipment? I'm using an 1941 Allis Chalmers B with a 3 pt. hitch on it. What would be the most economical way to get started? I see there are one and two row corn planters and have read some on this forum about "pumpkin plates" but I know next to nothing as to what would be the best. Thanks for any advice you're willing to offer!

Thanks for the reply guys. I'm hoping to have some fun with the community around here and make a little money to put back in the farm the next year. How much is a fair price for a JD 71? What are the benefits of one planter over another? I don't know anything at all about switching plates out....don't really know what they look like/how they function for that matter. In my mind, they have holes pre-determined to drop seeds every so many inches or so, but that's what I'm guessing from reading posts here and there.

Stephen, Im interested in your punkin project. This yr Im planting ornamental sun flowers, with an eye tword pumkins next yr.I will be planting in rows so I can cultivate, what do you do for weed control with punkins?? thanks Lou

Worry more about bug control than weed control. Both are key items to watch. Check with your extension service for the latest.

John Deere 71 units will plant both Indian corn and pumpkins provided you have the correct seed plates. Prices for these units are getting astronomically high on eBay but you might be able to find them far cheaper at used farm equipment yards. These yards would probably have a bunch of seed plates as well.
If you are talking about a relatively small area, planting pumpkins by hand actually goes pretty fast since the hills are so far apart and a $60 hand pushed seeder will do a good job with corn provided the soil is worked well.

I've raised between 1 & 3 acres of pumpkins for several years. Great little cash money making project and loads of fun when friends bring their kids! I took a one row tobbacco setter (Transplanter), cut the chain that held the pockets and removed. Added a short piece of pvc pipe down chute secured by 2 hose clamps to drop seed down. Helper rides setter (3 point hitch) and counts to 6 (or 8, 10, etc depending on speed) & drops 3 seeds. Cheaper than planters. Corn seed would work the same, just shorter count. No welding or anything required.
