Hi Forum

I'm thinking about getting a tub spreader. I have a 65 hp tractor .

Like opinions about tub sreaders; how many tons or brushells they hold. Which models or types work better or worse? Does a tub spreader spread even or just through it out in one heavy row. If I get one how full can you fill them.

I have two place I can get manure for free, if you would call it that. But I'm looking at the price of fertilizer an looks like I maybe can top dress some older hay fields and get better yeilds. Have about 300-400 tons of manure I can get. Some has been there for years.

Thanks !! Teddy

In my neck of the woods they are usually called barrel spreaders. The first problem I can think of as far as I am aware no one makes them anymore, although I was told that there might still be a manufacturer in the UK. If you can find a good used one they come in various capacities, they will spread "d*mn" near anything with the flail action. The down side is its difficult to get a uniform spreading action with them. If you are searching for a used one they are a pretty simple critter, but two item are what usually "killed" them. The first is usually the operator allowed the flail chains to stretch to much and the flails chopped into the body of the spreader. The second is the lids disintegrate after a while. There were 2 types of lids used. The 2 lid type that folds back on itself or the one piece that slides back on about a 45 degree angle. The one piece holds up better if you can find it. I don"t reccomend trying to use one without a lid, a good many years on a dairy farm taught me more than I ever wanted to Know about that!!

What is a tub spreader? I own a cone shape spinner spreader that I've wondered if i could maybe use chicken manure. Just a thought and maybe not a good one at that, but I have access to a lot of chicken manure. It would be for a pasture and I don't know how long the smell would last. Just stole the thread, I guess. bjr

Hi bjr

They are like a huge cyclinder shape. Have a shaft that runs down the lenght and there are chains that have T- like angles bolted on the ends and the shaft turns and the chains beat the manure out.

Have a Good One !!
