i live in ne pa and i want to try sorghum to chop and bunk for my beefers. ive been doing some looking at seed, but most of what i find is for southern regions of my state. i was wondering where you guys up north buy your sorghum seed, and how it does for forage. thanks

I live in Western NY and grow about 12 acres of BMR Sorgrum Sudan grass every year, this year I'm going to 20. I either chop it or make silage bales from it. My cows milk do better off the BMR SxS then when I have corn silage in the TMR. Most straight sorgrum varieties are for the south. BMR SxS can be gotten easily from most seed dealers(Agriculver, Barenbrug) and it performs much better then straight sorgrum in the Northeast, higher protein, higher digestability. I buy my seed from King's Agriseeds(1-866-687-6224) out of PA. They will also answer any question you might have about seeding and harvesting.

We grow thousands of acres of it here. grain and forage varietys both. Does real well in dry years. I plant CanexII and some BMR and it will generaly get 6 to 8 ft tall in drouth conditions. Don't know what it would do for you but I expect 12 - 15 feet tall and rank. We cut it for hay here, lays in the windrow about 10 days to cure out. It can be a bear to hay out if it happens to rain and the regrowth comes through it. I get real nice leafy feed with the Canex and the cows love it. I plant about 20 pounds per acre early June to mid July and harvest in about 45 days.
