I have a field I seeded in first year Lespedeza last year. We did no have any ice or snow to knock it down. I was wondering what to do with it. It is a mass of dead folage about 8 inches tall. I pastured it last summer and removed the cows in time for it to produce seed I hope. I was wondering if all this old folage will cause problems later. How good are the chance it has reseeded enough to produce good forage for this year. I would like to burn it off, but this would probably kill the seed. I would appreciate your response. I live in Southern IL. Thanks

It's a good idea to knock it down some way or another. That'll help next years come up a little easier. Brush hog is probably better than sickle. If the soil where like mine, I'd lightly disk it enough to knock down the old plants, and knock any seeds off, and maybe till a few seeds under the ground. I've got VERY heavy clay soil, with not much organic, but I don't know what you have.

thanks, my soil has a little top soil over yellow clay. It is on the top of a ridge.

Thanks for your comments. I forgot to mention I was planning to use it as a hay field this year. Maybe I should disk it lightly as it is very rough from all the cow tracks. I might add some more seed.

Lespedeza, as a legume, has nitrogen fixed in the root nodules. Like all legumes, it is a heavy nitrogen feeder, it just provides its own with some to spare. Estimates range upward of 100 pounds of actual N per acre in the plant tissue. If you burn it, this will simply form oxides which will be lost to you, and add to pollution. Let it rot, and it becomes free money, upward of $30 an acre at todays pices.

Brush hog off and let the stuff lay to make for some good soil. As it rots it will add back to the soil.
