New Holland Hay Rake Tear Down

I just got my hands on a hay rake and thought I might tear it down and put it in a utility trailer. Has anyone ever done this before. I would tow it, but it is about 70 miles away on all interstate. I saw one going down the highway toredown in the back of a pickup truck once is what gave me the idea.

I haul mine (and tow them too) pretty often. Not much trouble to haul on a full 8' wide trailer. Pick up with FEL and roll and an angle. I have to make a 12 mile interstate run about four times a year (or 45 mile 2 lane narrow state road with a 1 lane bridge) so I haul that trip. No tear down to it, set, chain, strap, and go.

There are spring loaded dogs in the hubs that drive the rake mechanism and allow it to turn corners and still work. The rake makes a clicking noise when turning if the dogs are in order. There are latches on the side of the hubs that hold the dogs out of engagement for transport. Be sure the latches are firmly engaged. Taking the driveshaft loose is a good idea and may make using the latches unnecessary, it been a while since I used a NH rake.

Mace, I'm sort of with the other guys here, I'm like Cowman, if I can tow it I do, I get on some back roads and usually get a buddy to come along and enjoy the sights. Brought a haybine 35 miles that way, hay elevator abour 20..distance doesn't matter , just find a good secondary road and go. I always check tires and bring along my handyman jack and the tool box, yes grease before you go, bring the air pig and you will get there. I was curious how you would tear it down. It should sit sideways on a small float but it should tow easier than that..... Mike in Exeter Ontario

I'd unhook the drive joint and tow it. Surely there are other roads besides the interstate?

Make sure the wheel bearings are full of grease before you take off with it, and like the cowman said, there are other roads. I usually find that I make just as good time off the interstate as I do on it. Sometimes better. I towed a grinder-mixer for 217 miles just a week ago.
