I found an old New Idea manure spreader under some junk in an old shed on a farm I just inherited. It has original orange/green paint and the wood is in great condition. It has iron wheels that drive the mechanisms. I want to sell it but no one in my area knows anything about them. Can anyone ballpark the year they stopped using iron wheels? I know this is better for a collector than for practical use, so any idea on price?

Thanks

The Amish here in Ohio and Indiana consider the New Idea Spreaders that were made here at Coldwater, Ohio in a factory that is just now being closed the best that were ever made. They made the No. 8, No. 9 No. 10, three different sizes. I have seen No. 10 that was in fair condition, but that needed work to use bring $ 750 dollars by the Amish on top of paying someone in the range of a $100 or more to bring then to the sale plus paying to have the machinery hauled for them. I have a spreader now to rebuild . I am friends with some Amish and have found different pieces of machinery for them. Leroy

Had a guy I buy hay off of give me one that I use once a week. Guess the value is in what someone will pay for it. Worth nothing to him, a lot to me.

We do most of our feild work with horses and use one of these spreaders. Mine is in very good condition and I gave $500.00 for it. We have many Amish friends and I don't think any of them would pay much more than this for one, original paint or not. I have seen a number of rough but useable ones sell at auctions for $250.00.

John: No. 10's were available with steel wheels and horse hitch equipment up until the late 60's. I have the brochures to prove. Tom

I have several old NI ads dated 1940-41 that show tires on all the spreaders, even the horsedrawns. However, I have a 1943 ad showing one on steel. I would say steel disappeared totally after WWII. In Lancaster PA, the Amish will pay $1000 for a good New Idea ground drive on full steel for everyday use. There are rebuilding services for these old NI spreaders advertized in our regional paper. They are all based in the Lancaster PA area.

Not just in Lancaster County. There are large Amish farming communities in central Ohio, and eastern Indiana, where the old New Idea No. 10 spreaders are in great demand. There are several Amish manufacturers in all three areas who are building new horse-drawn spreaders modeled on the No. 10. Most of these modern spreaders use poly-plastic instead of wood for the boxes to prevent rot.
