NH 276 and double length bales

If we don't get rain in the west central Missouri area I probably won't need to worry about baling hay, but just in case... The last time I used my NH 276 baler last fall I had about four instances (out of approx 150 bales) where it made a bale about twice as long as normal. I assume that this was because the knotter failed to cycle for some reason. Anyone had this problem before or have any suggestions where to look?

Trade it off and get a Hesston inline baler. Then you don't have to worry about different length bales. They will all be a different length. Used two of them, wouldn't have one if you gave it to me. The star wheel and trip arm are probably worn. Have to replace them on those Hesstons all the time. Also check the spring that applies the tension. Might be stretched. I finally put two springs on the Hesstons.

Had the same problem on a Super 77 years ago. Like the other posts say, the flat arm that fits in the star wheel adjuster is probably worn. I just welded a bead on the worn part and ground it smooth.
The star wheel comes apart and there is a hard steel grooved wheel inside that digs into the flat part. It might be a good idea to get a new one of these so the grooves will be sharp.

We borrowed a NH baler last year had the same problem, but it did alot of double bales, we parked it and the old McCormick 45 saved the day, The guy that owned the NH said we were going to slow and the windrows were small. But the 45 worked great.

Went thru that with a 268 and what was happening was the arm that ride on the wheel that turns as the bale moves back was bouncing down on the bumps it was wore out replaced the arm and the shaftwith the star wheel and made sure that it had the tenshion on the friction between the arm and shaft tight .

Like he said...there should be a wheel that measures length and a trip arm that works with the wheel which trips the knotters. Just missing a know would not cause this, it would leave an untied bale and unlikely to be untied on both sides. Look at your measuring wheel and trip arm and make sure you are adjusted and not worn out.
Top of the bale chamber to the rear of the knotters most likely.
