Will my Fordson Major diesel (around 40 hp, 5500 lbs) pull a 9' JD 1209 mower conditioner? The seller is sort of desperate to sell, and it's going cheap. It just needs a new cutter bar. Otherwise it's in good shape. Any thoughts?

Jason; My 1219 book say's 35 HP. Course, they probably meant John Deere HP not FORD. HA HA, Seriously I have been told tere was not much difference between the 1209 and 1219. Hope this helps some.

Your 1219 is also a 9' model? When I went to look at it, I was hoping it was a 7' version, but when she's asking $500 obo, I've got to take it seriously. I haven't seen another mower conditioner even close to this price in this area: it's not a big agricultural area. I appreciate the info though, and maybe I'll be asking more questions here if the deal is a go. What do you pull yours with?

I use my JD 4010 for cutting. I have 3 smaller tractors but dont like to pull them so hard and they are gas, the 4010 is deisel and just ease's along.

I pull my 1209 with a 85 hp Ford, works great. I pulled it with a 45hp 900 Ford, worked fine, but it was a pull, & the mower is pretty heavy - a bit of the tail wagging the dog. I am on ghills.

xxx9 is 9 foot, xxx7 is a 7 foot model.

Excuse my ignorance, but does ghills mean gentle hills? My fields that are suitable for a moco are pretty flat. The other is only good for sickle bar mower. My uncle pulled his 9' NH moco around last summer with his yellow IH diesel, about 40hp or so. Had no problem. I don't know how the NH and JD weights compare though. I'm getting the impression that my Fordson will just cut the mustard, assuming that it in that 40 hp range. Any advice on the 1209? I understand it has a funky hitch? I've never used a moco before, but this one's mighty cheap, and might be good to learn on. Or a great parts machine...

The "g" was a product of my fat fingers. The past 3 months I"ve gone to using my desktop Dell, my laptop Toshiba, & my wife"s iMac, and my brain & fingers are having a difficult time with the different keyboards, rather than just one as I used to use 90% of the time. I"ve noticed many of my messages have "issues" of late - I need to proofread better, or put my fingers on a diet. :)

I have hills, not real bad, but a notch more than gentle.

Jason,your tractor should pull the 1209 on level ground with no problem. The funky hitch is an equal angle hitch that JD came out with to stop drive line viberations in sharp turns and if installed correctly it "works". Be sure to look at wobble box mounting bracket. Make it is not cracked or has been welded on as this was one weak point on 1209. Tx Jim
