How many bottom plow do you think a 60 HP tractor will pull??

You should be able to pull 4X14- 4x16's if they are semi mounts and you did not say what tractor . i found out that the semi mount pulls easier then a full mount but if it is a drag plow then 3x16's will be the best here in the buckeye . My S/MTA runs 58 hp. and has all it wants with 3x16's behind it, where as my old 450 D had around 60 + and ran hard with 3x16 mounted when i went to the 540 4x16's they pulled easier even with the clod buster down then the 3x16 did i could run 3rd hig with either plow in corn ground and 2nd in sod.

Nathan, around here in North central Texas, you can figure about 1.4 times the total bottom width for 16 in bottoms. Use about 1.2 for 14 in bottoms. For instance: 3 16in bottoms = 48 in X 1.4 = 67 HP. My MF is rated at 67 PTO HP and will handle 3 16s. I have pulled 4 14s with it also about 7 in deep. Figure 4 X 14 = 56 X 1.2 = 67 HP. For 2 14s you would have 28 X 1.2 = 34 HP. For 14 in plows figure 7 in for 16 in plows figure 8 in deep. Of course a lot depends on your soil and how fast you plow. Your 60 PT0 HP will probable do OK with 3 14s or 3 16s depending upon the soil. Tom

All of the posts have good advice. In the field, however in this size of tractor it always seems that your are always about 10 horse short, no matter what you start out with!!!!! ....QR..

Sorta like the story of my adult life..... ..always a little short..... .(that is what Hugh claimes..... .GRIN...)

I have very heavy clay soils. A 3-16 would be _all_ you want to pull in my ground. I had a 4-16 on a 90 hp tractor, was a tough pull some years, now I have a 4-18 on a 135 hp tractor, could probably go to 5 bottoms but there are days the 4-18 is plenty.

You can always drive a little faster if the going is easy, but once you hit the limit, there is no way to go slower, you are done for.

There are lots of variables, soil type and tractor type as others mention.

A neighbor used to say 15 horsepower per bottom around here.60 hp.=4-16s.

Twelve 20 inch bottoms if you gear it down enough and add enough weight. What kind of soil, what kind of plough, what kind/model of tractor, hills, wet, dry, 2WD or 4WD?

Nathan: Lot of variables in there. First is the type of tractor. American built row crops will handle alot more plow than utilities will. You haven't said whether that hp is flywheel, PTO or drawbar, that does make a difference Then there is the ballast or weight added to tractor and last but not the least soil type.

Given all those variables the answer is somewhere between 3x16 and 5x16

Rough guideline: 60 hp 60 in of plow; like 4-14's or 5 12's. Also about a ton of tractor per bottom. 4-14's on an 8000 lb tractor (like a 656 or 3020) works well. Of course, soil type, type of terrain etc are factors.
