Water Trough repair

I have this old water trough that I may need to use, it looks good but it had three pin holes in the bottom. I brazed the holes shut and the repair looks OK but I'm wondering if there is any sealer I could put on the inside of the trough that will secure the repair and not taint the water and/or harm cattle if they get nibbling at it(and they will!) The trough looks real good otherwise and I only need it for a few months untill I can turn the cattle out...Mike in Exeter Ontario

I remember about 45 years ago, My dad and grandpa used to use bolt, washers, and rubber washer (made from innertube) and nut. Enlarge hole with drill to bolt size. That was the days before RTV silicone, which I would use today. Roofing tar would also probably work. I used epoxy covered with roofing tar on a gas tank that had pinholes on the top. Worked fine.

Michael: I hope your not doing this tonight, at least not out in the middle of the barn yard at your farm.

I've had great luck on projects like yours with gasket maker or black which ever you want to call it. I once smeared it into pin holes on a 6.2 diesel oil pan as a temperary fix. 300,000 Km later it was still there and oil pan never leaked again. It made me a believer.

There is a Permetek epoky that will work on metal tanks, I used it eariler this winter...I think it was the four hour curing time one. So far no problems or ill effects.

Mike,

I have a trough that I thought was seeping water out of the bottom. After further inspection, I found out that it wasn't, so I didn't have to do anything for it. I did, however, before I determined that the tank wasn't leaking, look at various silicone sealants in a couple of different farm and hardware stores. Every one of them said that they are not for use in aquaria or other water-holding tanks.

So, my plan, which I never implemented since I found out that the tank was okay, was to go to a local pool supply store and see if they have any sealant that they recommend for use in their pools. I don't know if there is something like that, but I think I would try them if I needed something to seal a tank.
