Since we have a couple of guys on here who seem to know Vermeer products fairly well I'd like to hear a little about their disk mower conditioner's. I've found a '99 Vermeer MC830 center pivot disk mower conditioner that appears to be in good shape but all the Vermeer disk mower conditioners seem to be alot cheaper than other brands which makes me wonder if there is a problem with them that makes them sell cheaper. Does Vermeer make their own cutter bar and how expensive is the cutter bar to work on compared to other brands?

Hay Dr., are these shaft drive mowers easier to pull than gear drive? I have a Vicon CM247(7'10") that I bought new last year to put on my Kubota M4700. Dealer told me I could pull it, and I can. But the tractor runs hotter than I think it should, doesn't overheat, just runs warmer than I like. Vicon says my mower needs 46 hp, I only have 42. I was looking at a Hesston 7'10" and it says it only needs 40 hp, their 6'9" only needs 35hp. Does the shaft drive really pull that much easier? Which size would you recomend for my tractor? I want to take as big a swath as I can but don't want to burn up my tractor? How big of a beating will I take on my used 05' Vicon CM247? It has only been over 50 acres and has been kept in the barn.

The shaft drive disc mower needs 20% less power than the oil bath style mowers. Take a HayMAXX 7'10" shaft drive mower needs only 40 HP. The oil bath mowers have the extra drag due to the oil and a 1/3 more moving parts. Vicon's also take more HP because of 3 blades per disc. Most all the mowers mow about the same but the difference is in the durability, down time and HP needed to operate the mower.

Vermeer uses a Lely cutterbar that is shaft driven. The mowers are made in Pella Iowa. The New Idea and Hesston cutterbar is similar but theirs is made by Comer. The shaft drive cutterbars have 1/3 less parts than a conventional oil bath cutter bar like Kuhn, John Deere, Vicon, Krone, Claas, etc. The shaft drive cutterbars are very easy to repair and can be done so even in the field. There is no oil to have to deal with. They use EP-0 grease in each individual cutter head gear box. You can update that 830 mower with the quick clip change blades. The Vermeer uses a 5mm thick blade that lasts 20-30 longer than the thinner blades that other MFG's use.
