I'm the wrong guy to ask 'cause I'm really, really wormy for these old chainers, therefore I'm certainly biased.

The 849 is just a smaller version of the 855 except it has eight big compression springs to tighten the bale instead of the the two air bladders like the larger baler has.

What this means is that if you really want a 'very tight' bale, you have to watch your ground speed and slow 'er down. It will bale anything you throw at it, but you've got to keep the groundspeed down right at 4.5 mph for the best results.

Also, I like that big roller in the floor vs the floor chains of the 850 and 851. It has a "rock door" down underneath which can be shut and this insures you won't loose a single leaf.

It builds a 4.9 (59") x 5.0' bale and I wouldn't take $10K for mine considering today's cost of the new ones.

But, like I say, I'm really biased. :>)

When I was farmin' for real, we used an 851, which I thought was the next best thing to sliced bread.

This 849 feels exactly the same except the pickup is just slightly narrower.
