I haven't priced anything yet this spring but I hear you guys talking about twine going up, pesticides going up, fertilizer going up, fuel oil going up, is anything going down but my self esteem? Is the price for a bale of hay going up?
Or is the price of a ton of corn going up? I doubt it and that puts a real crimp on a hobby farmer like me with 100 acres. I like to farm just for the enjoyment of it but anymore it seems as though it is getting to be more of a headache. Oh well just my thoughts. Anyone else feel the same way?

I agree where is it going to end? I have to restore tractors for folks all winter so I can work my tail off for nothing all summer. I just got a notice to day from some folks that have purchased my alf alfa for the past five years, that they are divorcing and declaring bankruptcy! I would rather give my hay to farmers in Texas and Oklahoma than to trust another one of these big shot horse people! Every time I go to town I have to use a credit card cause you never know what the cost of any thing will be, and it gets to the point that nothing suprises me any more. But for the politicians and news people trying to blow smoke up my a$$ that inflations in check I would love for them to pick up the tab on my baling wire and fuel compared to two years ago.....

We have been feeling that here in Ohio and we have always made our living from farming. Now I am wondering with a Master Degree if my dream of taking my dads place is only a dream.

It is only going to get worse, energy will go up, we will loose more subsidy from our bankrupt G'VT, don't forget sprawl, inflated housing market driving houses on farmland, health insurance etc.

Something is going to happen I am young but old enough to not like what's going on and the future for agriculture in general.

Farmertee, I am a lot like you, have the home 100 and try to run it as a profitable farm but, I couldn't make a living off the farm no matter what. I live off my pension and I do make some money off of my calves every year that is an added bonus to my income , but making a living off of the farm...? Can't be done!..I have taught school for 31 years then worked as a mechanic for 3 and now doing maintenance work for a fellow, all those years I had the farm and all those years I had to work out, even now with my pension I need this maintenance job to live a decent life. Farm taxes are getting crazy too, here in Ontario we are only taxed on buildings, school tax on all property, I'm about $2600 a year for taxes..I enjoy my cattle and my old tractors, so for me farming has become a life style that I couldn't afford if I didn't work out and have a pension to get me by....Mike in Exeter Ontario

$2600 a year Canadian? I wish I had taxes that low. 52 acres that is farmland assessed, several buildings, and the old farmhouse costs us $8000 US a year in property taxes. Fortunately New Jersey does not collect property tax on the mobile equipment and animals like some other states do.

Few people got bills for $700 plus last month, natural gas in town. Was a real mild winter so far, got to 40 a few days.
