IH 440 Baler

I purchased one of these this weekend for $575. I purchased it because it was by far the best looking baler I've seen for the price (Good Condition). The seller said he put some bales through it last summer and it missed a few so he baught a new bale hook. He gave me the hook still in the box. I assumed it was an easy fix.
Well, this morning I'm reading the posts on this model and alot of people do not like them. Any opinions on these? Did I get ripped? By the way, I do not have a large haying operation, mabie 1000 bales a year to feed to my animals.

I guess the IH square baler in its heyday was comparable to New Holland and John Deere models. Broke a crankshaft in a 440, but I guess any square baler could break a crankshaft if you use it long enough. Hope parts are available.

Nate, I bought one 2 years ago for about $200. Got me a manual and noticed that the knives were hitting each other so I replaced all of the bearings on the plunger, sharpened the knives, and put it back together. I have baled hay with it for 2 years without major problems. Baled a 1000 or so bales one afternoon and opened up 2 of them. One thing I can tell you is that the knives that cut the twine need to be kept sharp. They are cheap $1.80 per pair sold only in packs of ten( what a rip). Send me your snail mail address and i will mail a pair for your baler.

get a manual (I bet IH can still get you one) and keep it adjusted. Yeah, it will miss a bale once in a while but the 440 is one heck of a baler. The harder you push it the better it will tie. Oh and by the way, buy the best twine you can find.

I have one and have good luck with it. I think you did OK. Just need to keep it adjusted. For your 1000 bales it should work well. I'm doing around 4000 and do OK. Parts are still avalible too. I'm going to switch to plastic this year due to mice problem.

Thanks for the reply. When I first saw it I thought waaaayyyy out of my price range. I have been pricing them for a while now and have not seen anything as clean as this one for the price. That is why I bought it on the spot. If they have a bad wrap for tying I can see why it is cheaper. I will get the manual, read it, and run it slow. Can't wait to try it. Do you have a 440?

I run IH balers and will admit that knives and knotters must be carefully adjusted. Most people don't check the manuals or run them too fast and have problems. That isn't a large amount to spend on a baler of that capacity.

You may have been ripped, you may have the best deal around. Everything depends on condition, and performance in the field.
