There was a lot of discussion about twine on another site but I never really got this question answered. Is some twine more rodent proof than others? There will be the odd year where the mice go wild in our straw bales. I have had friends tell me stack the bales with the strings on the side rather than top and bottom but I guess my mice are smarter than his 'cause they figured that one out. I baled some oat straw this year which I don't normally do and they are much worse there than in the barn that had wheat straw in it.

I have to agree with jimont, its not the twine their after its the grain still in the straw. I put oat hay up every spring and have never had a batch not come loose from the mice. they work their way thru getting at the grain and makes the bales loose. If it wasnt such good feed in the winter I wouldnt mess with it because of the little sh!theads. I have about 10 barn cats and they are as fat as the mice

No offence meant here, but mostly the only time we've had a big problem with mice & rats in a straw mow is when the straw has some grain left in it due to poor threshing. We just gave them a free meal and a home to boot !!

We usually had some black snakes or half wild cats out in the barn to work on the rodent population.

I haven't seen any twine that's rodent proof. Plastic twine holds up better than sisal against rats. I had a rat and snake problem a couple of years ago. I mowed around the barn real good and put out rat poison. It seemed to have dampened them alot. My problem was the rats would build tunnels in the stack of hay, and the copper heads would come in after them. You would pick up a bale and there would be a snake.
