Haking hay in late 40's

Making Hay in late 40's using late stat of the art IHC equipment---- 2) FArmall M (largest row crop at that time) 1) Farmall c
The hay equipment ---27V-7'mower---?-7' mower for the C ---?-IH sidedelivery rake --- 50T hay bailer with IH engine and optional front wheel ---3--IH heavy duty wagons 2 --14' and 1 --16'....wagon beds built in Grandfathers black smith shop /IHC Dealer, in Burlingtin Ky.

Now that was slow ,but I was having fun at about 12 years old....The equipment was new and replaced every 2 years with new...slow but didn't know any better..... ...

In the mid 70s we used a Cub Farmall to cut hay (5'sickle bar), raked with a big tired rake which actually worked pretty well again with the Cub, and baled with an Oliver 50 twine baler with a Wisconsin engine. We pulled that with the Cub also! 1st gear with as much RPM as the little Cub could muster. With each stroke of the baler I think we actually lost ground..We worked this same set-up for nearly 10 years. The Cub still runs but is retired now and waiting for a rebuild when I retire.

We made hay that way in the 60's.
We sure wished we had a "M". Only had 2 Farmall "H's" and a 8-N Dorf.

We mowed with the oldest H useing a drawbar mounted IHC mower. Ran the crusher right behind that with the 8-N. Raked with steel wheel IHC rake pulled by the Dorf. Baled with the newer H that had a M&W hand clutch. Milked 67 cows.

Inthe late 40's my Dad farmed 320 acres in Northern ILl. and had a 40 Cow herd of Purebred and Grade Guernsey Cattle with all the Associated Livestock such as Bulls,Calves,Dry Cows. He had a Hired Man and Me [I was born 1937] and himself. Hay was put up loose some and some was Baled with a Case Baler with Hand Tied Wire. Two Guys did the Wire and Tieing. Hay was cut with two Horse Mowers drawn by Teams of Horses until 1947 when the Tongues were shortened and he started pulling them with Tractors. In 1950 he got a Ford Tractor with a Mounted 7' Mower so the Horse Mowers were Junked. The First Tractors I remember was a Hart Parr and two AC UC Tractors. Eventually all Those disappeared and a MM U and A Couple of WD45's and a Different Ford showed up. I first was allowed to drive the Ford ,which I think was an 8N, Eventually in the 1950's haying with Bales was scrapped and a New Fox Chopper ,Blower and several unload Wagons came into use and was used until he Quit. When I Dairy Farmed I used a Fox Chopper also ,a much more modern one than dad had , A self Propelled Hay Bine and a AC 7' mounted Mower along with an AC Tractor Hay Rake. and A Fox Blower with Keller Unload Wagons on 10 ton Case Wagon Gears.My Power was a AC 190 xt, a AC D17 and several WD 45's.
