If you read the below post, you'll know I'm going to a consignment auction tomorrow looking for a 2-3 bottom three point plow. One of the local dealers said my David Brown 880 Implematic (3 cyl) is a two bottom machine. I tend to disagree as a 9n seems to be more of a 2 bottom machine and I've seen pics of 880s pulling a three bottom. The 880 is a 35/40 draw/PTO HP machine that weighs 4300 lbs. What size plow should I be after?

I bought a Massey Furguson 3-16 for $200, the third point comes off easily to make it a nice heavy 2-16, plus I have the added benefit of having a spare plow, point and coulter. It was pretty darn heavy though and had to go home and get a bigger truck. My two nephews had a great time at the farm auction also.

Leroy is right on. Everyone's soil and plowing depth is different, but 20 PTO HP per 16 inch bottom is right on the money. With less HP per 16 inch plow you will end up plowing shallow, spinning wheels too much, or going too slow.
I would use 2 14's or 2 16's on your DB880.

We have an 880 Selectamatic (white&brown) that easily handles a DB 12"three furrow plow in clay.

No more than a 3-12" and 2-14" would be more like it, 3-12" is what I pulled with a 38HP John Deere A and 2-12" with a 27HP Harmal H or 28HP John Deere B, the 23HP Ford 2N has all it can handle with a 2-12". The soils now take about at least half again as much power for plowing as they did when these tractors were new. I have heavy clay and when Dad bought that Ford new the dealer brought out a 2-14" that it was supposed to be able to handle, after 2 rounds the dealer took it back and brought out the 2-12" that I still have along with the tractor. Figure at minimum for a 12" bottom 13HP, 14" 15HP, and 16" 20HP, Now if you have verry light easy working soil then you might get by with a larger plow but with smaller you will have more plowed at the end of the day as you will be able to keep moving

We pulled 2-14"s starting with a TE-20,then a TO-30,641 Ford,800 Ford and a 3cyl Ford 2000.The best tractor for plowing was the 800 and the 2000 was the worse.

Later,pulled 3-14"s with a SM Farmall and 4-16"s with the 706 ger.
