Just picked up a 3pth 2 bottom Oliver plow for my 550. This plow is a 3240 ST. I now have a plow that matches my 550.

Any tricks of the trade you care to share for a fully mounted plow?

Any difference in setting this plow up vs. a trailing plow?

I have run a 4340 3 bottom plow behind the 550 but only VERY SHALLOW. Also have a rednecked new ground plow (pan plow, disk plow etc) I built a couple yrs. back that works well in the planted pines.

Thanks!

Shep, I"ve been plowing my garden for the last couple of years with an early Super 55 and a Ford 2-14 mounted plow. I don"t have weights on my tractor (yet)and after leveling the plow and getting it scoured I can pull it about 7" deep in 3rd gear full throttle. I"m plowing black clay ( which is pretty sticky). The draft control on my Oliver isn"t working right, when the lever is set to draft control the plow won"t raise at the end of the garden unless I have the draft sensing link set so sensitive the plow won"t hardly stay in the ground. So I just use the position control, when I start to spin I quickly raise the plow and drop it again. I hope to plow a little deeper once I get a set of weights for it. Since you have more hp than I do and maybe weights I don"t see any problems what so ever plus I know around here the Oliver plows pulled easiest by far but I don"t know if that also goes for their mounted plows. If you"ve got any questions feel free to email me.

Hey Shep,
I've got a 3 bttm. 3242 for my 550. I had to move the drawbar hitch over to the side or the front of the plow would get stuck on it. A little adjusting on the top link and arms and you'll be in business. Might have to adjust your wheels too depends on how serious you want to get. AB

2 bottom plows usually work well, but here in PA a three point plow of 3 bottoms or more generally have trouble, because it seems the back bottom is either a foot deep or 2 inches deep, depending on what the front of the tractor is doing. The key to three point plows is leveling them. One trick you can try is to block up the left side of the tractor with blocks as thick as your plow depth. (6" or so) Use the cranks on your three point arms to get the plow leveled side to side, and then use the toplink to lever it front to back. After you use it a little, you'll understand the plow pretty well and just adjust it as you go till its working well.

Unless your tractor has a draft control that constantly adjusts for depth, it'll give you fits. I finally installed a depth guage wheel on my 2 bottom, and run it on the "float" position. Like the other poster says, depends on what the front end is doing! Oh, the old days with a trailer plow - what a nice job you could get.
