My wife and I are looking into buying about 80 acres and someday would like to be able to bale our own hay on 5 to 10 acres. We have a nice running Ford 2N and would like to know what model/brand balers would work behind this tractor.

Thanks,

Brad

I agree with need for motor powered baler behind 9N or 2N. On the other hand I have a 52 8N and a Ford 250 Series 504-1 PTO baler and put up about 4000 bales a year. The 8N actually handles the baler better than our 44 JD A because it is easier to jump in and out of gear on heavy windrows. The Ford balers were made to go behind the 8N and newer small Fords, have really short draw bars, and run very easily with low power requirement.

The New Holland 66 with engine, pulled one for several years with 44 2N bought new by Dad in May of 44. Made 36" bales pulling wagon with 125 bale per load on gently rolling ground, when I was about 12 I drove to baler and Dad loaded and have put up over 1,000 bale in a day with that outfit with 3 wagons. That was Dad's only tractor untill 57 and done everything on the farm, Plowing, Disking, Planting, cultivating, mower and rake, first years a 42" pto combine later a AC 60 with it's own engine, GI 1 row corn picker with same wagon that hauled the 125+ loads of bales, pulled a flail forage harvester chopping feed for cows. We have the tires loaded and for groung working we have a set of homemade concrete wheel weights that weigh approx 300# each but come hay time those weight's were off for cultivating. The one thing that I have found it doesen't have enough power for is a 5' rotary mower that so many people think is the only thing they can do with them. I still have the tractor and still work some ground with it but I lost Dad in 92 and still miss him.

Thanks Leroy, this is the kind of information I was looking for. We'll keep our eyes open for a New Holland 66 baler. RN also mentioned a John Deere 14T. I'll do some nosing around and see what shows up.

Thanks!

Brad

The supper 66 followed the 66 and had a different setup on the measuring wheel for the bales and could be set for from 24" to 42" bales while the 66 had only 3 bale sizes avaible of 30", 36", and 42" set from factory at 36" and that was what we ran for several years till Dad decided he did not want that heavy a bale anymore so reset to 30", The S66 had a bit of difference in platform but I have yet to figure out what it is. I have 2, a 66 & a S66 that I want to combine into one good baler. The one we had Dad bought new in 54 or 55 but they came out about 52 and we put thru enough bales that the engine had to be rebored and was wore to that point again when we sold it after buying a IHC 46 PTO baler with a kicker after 3 of us got sick with heat exaustion or heat stroke in one year with the 66, the JD 14T is slightly larger than the 66, more the size of the IHC, Dad wanted the 14T but at 3 times the price of the IHC went with IHC. New Holland had made twine balers before the 66 but the 14T was john Deere's first twine baler starting in 55 with a 14W a year later followed by the 24T &24W. John Deere's previous balers were the 114 and 116, both wire and I have 2 of those 116W balers, called sidewinders, that were made thru 55, also the 14T was the first baler from Deere that the wagon followed in back of the baler. I have seen since I got these 2 parts 66 balers good ready to bale PTO 66 go at auction for $60. We sold all hay equipment in 81 after selling the dairy heard in 80. I have only 9 tillable acres anymore and want to rebuild those New Holland balers into one good one and get my ground into alfalfa and figure I should be able to do the baleing pulling a flat wagon with either my 41 9N or the 44 2N.

Bales ran about 50# and always used 2nd gear, never had ocacision to need the extra power to shift to low, just controled ground speed with throtle and with engine you can do that. Later had a IHC pto baler with kicker and to start pulled that with a A John Deere at 39hp, decided to hook it up to B john Deere at 28hp and handled it better than bigger tractor with 7x18' rack wagon. Never had live pto to use and never missed it on baler.

You got used to little Ford for everything, they did manage do do a lot. I started with farmall H and got used to it and M, 560, 350. Little Ford work was on neighbors tractors when sharing work, seemed a bit low after learning to cultivate with H. RN

JD 14t with its own engine. New holland had a similar size with engine also- farmer in neighborhood few years back was using one behind Ford N in small fields. Old has stated the problem- too light and low power for large PTO baler. If you do use the Ford N to pull powered baler you should drop small bales (35-40 lbs) on ground and pickup later with small rack- no more than 40 bales, 30 better, don't pull both baler and wagon. 5 to 10 acres on level ground, 1st gear, you should be able to get the hay up slowly. Have baled with PTO 14t behind H farmall, but IHC 350d with live PTO much better. These have an extra 1000 lbs on Ford N and 10 to 20 more HP.

Theres a few of them that a 2N can pull but it will over task it and lead it to an early grave. Unless you find a baler with its own engine on it. The problem is the 2N is to light and just doesn't have the HP to run a baler very well and will over work it badly.
