20 acres and an 8N. I remember those days...
The first "Implements" I'd suggest are a padded seat, and a bottle of Ibuprofen for your back!

Have fun, be safe, and Good Luck

Further info helps. $475.00 price 2row?- In Iowa and Wi you could get a 4 row for less $, but TimNJ has noted high price for mounted 2rows for gardeners there, Ford 3pt equipment getting almost as high priced as JD(green gang- don't cuss me, family farm has 3 greenies). If it works good for you the price is about right, as noted others you have possible special gardening planter that probably would cost $2000.00+ new. Sandy soil and bird cover, no harvest planned- you could maybe get by with a single 6-8 foot disk with large 20-22inch blades for ground prep. Wi dells area is sandy also, plowing of cleared pine forest ground isn't done much, couple passes with disk and drag makes good seed bed for hay ground. Ford users also mount double gang 6 foot disks with smaller blades. A S or C toothed field cultivator is another option. The old Ford plow standard was a 2-12 unit, if you don't find one for less than $200.00 you might consider a single 'middlebuster' off brand unit- makes a handy potatoe planter/digger or a single 14 to 16 inch moldboard plow. Around Wisconsin Ford Ns are big garden tractors, light utility and mower rigs, 20 acres rough crop for feed and whatever light hauling should be good use. RN

It sure wouldn`t be a good buy if it were my money. But then an 8N Ford wouldn`t be what I would consider a tractor worth the money, unless you could get one for $1200 or less. I see the silly Fords advertized for $4000. Heck for that kind of money you can get a D-17 series 4 Allis, or for half that you can get a D-19, 70 hp for half what a 25 hp Ford is bringing. The yuppie "farmers" are driving Ford the market crazy.

What is it that you are wanting to grow? The reason I ask is that a Planet Jr is a fairly specialized vegetable planter and may not do what you want if you are thinking about the usual corn, soybeans, etc. The Planet Jr really does not singulate seeds as it basically dribbles them through an adjustable orifice hole. And, I don't believe that the PJ was ever available with disk openers, something you may want if you are trying to plant into any amount of residue. If you are planning to grow corn, beans, etc. a regular plate planter like a Deere #71 or 290 might be a better choice.

It would be helpful if we knew where you were and what is grown in that area. What do you mean by hobby? Are you planning to to grow some of your own pet horse feed, or garden, or feed the deer under the tree stand used to harvest venison? Is there a tax advantage to farming the land if you show some income? RN

You will need a plow, disk, harrow, planter, cultivator or sprayer, and some way to harvest whatever it is you plant. I would suggest that you visit a university extension office if there is such a thing in your area.

What do you plan to grow? That will help determine what else you need other than what Ken listed.

You oughta have a good set of plows to turn the soil over . A set of discs to break up the sod ,& a spring tooth harrow to help with smoothing off the ground . But it depends on how much you want to spend , & work the ground . Have fun . Sure wish I had 20 acres to play on . Ken
