Converting 3-point mower deck to drag behind

I've purchased several acres of land and there is a 3-point hook-up "brush hog" style mower deck abandoned on the property. I haven't had a chance to check it out thoroughly yet. It looks to be in pretty good shape. (Im from the Case discussion board). I have an antique 1941 Case VC with pto , it doesnt have hydraulics. I am wondering if I can't convert it to a drag behind mower towing it from the drawbar. Has any one seen anyone do this successfully. Unless I have some sort of offset axle, a straight axle has to go behind the gearbox. Any ideas on varying height adjustment controls? Any ideas and sketched would be greatly appreciated. --JPM

Hi John I did a convertion on a three point bush hog for my M a couple of years ago . Itook off the three point stuff, welded on two 1/2 X2 steel bars on top of the ribs on the mower, spaced to fit the outermost holes on the draw bar. I used grade 8 bolts with about 2 1/2 '' of shank between the threads and head. You have to hook up the PTO to space the mower from the tractor right. One rear wheel works good because the drawbar gives it stiblity.it swings with the tractor so it is easy to control it in turns. the rear wheel is adjustable for height. the only thing is I can't lift it off the ground.Mine has worked great for 2 years now.I can't send any pic. because it is up north at my 40.I could E-MAIL you a sketch if you send me your add. Good luck Dennis in MI. [email protected]

It can be done but by the time you buy the steel and if you have to buy two rear wheels instead of the one I assume it has now you might be better off selling it and buying a pull type mower. You can buy a rachet lift gismo to replace the hydraulic cylinder. Now if you can weld and have the iron you need maybe you still want to convert it. To hire it done might cost more than a differant mower. Make sur the gear box and moving parts are good on the mower before starting to rebuild into pull type mower or you will have more cost.
I can draw a sketch and email if you need it.
Just my thoughts.

Check salvage yards for old hay conditioners, two-row corn stalk choppers. They typically had a acme-threaded hand crank lift assembly between the frame and wheels. 3 joint pto from baler, etc would be better than a straight two joint shaft.
