Generator hook up to tractor pto?

Have a 10kw generator with 1" shaft which requires 3600 rpm's to operate, would like to attach to 23hp tractor with a 560rpm pto. My question is what size belt pulleys would I need to go from 560 pto rpm's to 3600 rpm at generator, secondly from 300 rpm's to 3600 rpm at generator. Getting ready for next hurricane season..... thanks in advance..... ....Ed.

It will be cheaper and fewer headaches to sell your 10KW to somebody with a 3600rpm small engine and use a love-joy coupling. Then go out and purchase a 15 or 20kw pto generator with a factory 450 to 1800 rpm gera box.

I have a 25 KW PTO gen set that I run with several different tractors. Real handy when the power is out. Have you thought about a gear box instead of belts? Might be easier to get the raito you need. Also a four pole machine (1800 RPM) would help the required raito out some. PK

What b&d said is right. For your secondary question, the ratio is 12, and you need adequate belt wrap on the small pulley in either case, to avoid slippage. 12 to 1 would be a 4 inch on the gen, 48 inch on the pto shaft.!!!Not likely to pull full load very well. Maybe could get by with 3 inch (gen) at 540 rpm, but that would take about 20 inch on the pto. 3 inch is not much wrap.

3600/560=6.43 times ratio larger on the driving pulleys than the driven pulleys.

For a PTO driven genset the tractor governor needs to be very good. Especially important if you have a pulley setup since you will be amplifying any rpm variance due to the pulley setup. Unless you run a constant electrical load the tractor governor will have to compensate for the ebb and surge of the generator and the resulting variable load put on the PTO. If the genset output is regulated internally you may not have any issues but you might want to look into it.

Been thinking about one myself.

I found this on the utterpower.com web site. Hope it works for you. the line in the middle means you need to divide by that number.

D2 = D1 x N1 _____ _

D1= Diameter of pulley on engine D2= Diameter of pulley on generator
N1= RPM of engine
N2= RPM of generator
