Vermeer 605 K

Just bought a vermeer 605 K at an auction. Gave 4900, looks pretty good. has one belt I am going to have to re lace.
I see the hand crank to move the pickup unit up and down some but when I lower it all the way it is up still up to high, is there another lever to lower the pickup unit. This baler seems to be allot different from the 605 F I have now.
Is there anything about these balers I need to know. Have they been good balers? Pros and cons of these baler. What should I check on this baler.

The series K was an excellent baler in hay and good in cornstalks. The Net wrap was not perfected well. But a good dealer new how to make them work. The series K was our 4th Vermeer and the only used one we ever purchased. It burnt after 10 days of use from a bearing in the pick-up cam assembly. The K actually was a better machine for us than the L that we purchased after the fire. 2 seasons later we got an 605XL and really loved that baler. This past season I bought a 605M and WOW it will bale cornstalks at 55-70 bales an hour. As with any Vermeer you need new rubber teeth every 2500 bales to maintain capacity. Also, relace the belts every 1000 bales if you want to minimize downtime. We found that using cheap bar and chain oil poured on the chains every 4 hours or after transporting dow a gravel road has helped us the most in preventing wear. Good Luck

Thanks for the comments and suggestion. I have a manual coming from Vermeer for FREE. Can not beat that deal. I did talk to someone at Vermeer and he told me the adjustment was by the axles. He also said that the 1993 models had most of the problems worked out of them. I have heard pros and cons on the K's so be anxious to see how it bales.

Yes there is another adjustment, but I can't describe how to do it easily. Go and get a manual for it. You WILL use it. There are several adjustments to set it up for your tractor.

Don't have a K, but my 505I has a way to lower the tongue. You might check that on your K, also is there any way to change the height of your tractor drawbar?

Vermeers have a habit of having roller and shaft bearing go bad. Run the baler, listen for noise, cut off tractor, feel bearings for heat. Top roller at front sometimes gets bent on some models, don't think K is one, but watch for any wobble in the shafts while running. Check condition of chains, idlers, and check for wear on sprocket teeth. Vermeers are well built machines and use thick material.
