Got a guy at work that offered me a New Holland Super 76 or 78. Couldn't remember for sure which it was. He's thinking around $400. He said it had a Wisconsin engine but it hasn't been run for a couple of years since he has gone to round baling all his hay. He told me he would send some pictures and I could stop by and look at it when I get in (from offshore) and we would run the engine.
My question is and I'm more curious than thinking of doing this, can those balers with the engines be changed to be pto driven? What all would be involved with that? Flywheel and pto shaft? What about the gearboxes on engine balers vs. pto driven. Are they the same? I've never been around engine driven balers before so any comments you guys have about them would be welcome.

I have been looking for a Super 76 baler with the Wisconsin engine on it. This was the first baler that my husband and his brother had on our farm and their dad scrapped it years ago. They would like to get one and restore it for nostalgic reasons. If anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Mike I might be interested in swapping you pto for engine if you decide to buy the baler. I live in east Tx. may not be far from you. I am always looking for those old NH balers with the engines. Thanks

For $400 you could find a good NH baler at least 20 years newer and save all the hassle about converting. That baler is about 50 years old.

Depends on the model. If it is a 78 old is correct in that it needs only a pto shaft and clutch. Not cost effective unless you can find a junker. I think a 76 is a very old baler with curtains like an old binder or combine to carry the hay up. If it is a 77 I have changed that hard to start Wisconsin to pro. Found a junker. A 77 needs a pto shaft, a gearbox, and a longer tongue. Not too many 77s had pto drive.

The only thing you need is the PTO shaft and clutch assembly. The flywheel and gear boxes are all the same. The flywheel is even drilled and tapped for the clutch to bolt on.

Yep most can be change over to PTO drive. The nice thing about the ones with there own engine is the fact you can use a smaller tractor to pull them. Cost to switch it over might be high depending on it you have to buy the parts new or if you find them used
