We have a Monosem planter (a French machine) which has been in use for many years. It works on a vaccum principle and will accurately plant large seeds of any size or shape. It will even plant small seeds such as beets by changing the seed pickup discs.

I have planted okra, sweet corn and a few others with my Dempster lister planter. We have even planted pumpkins. We ran a tube down to the seed drop tube and dropped the seeds in outselves. It just go slow. With the Dempster plates you can make them to the size and spacing you want by drilling them out with blank plates they also had predrilled.

Other people I know drop the pumpkin seeds by hand. It works fine. I think that pumpkins could be planted with plates if you could figure out a way to get the seeds to lay flat in the cells without breaking them.

According to Deere literature, the 33 can only handle seeds up to 3/16" diameter so that would rule it out for what you are wanting to plant. On the other hand, the 71 can plant just about anything provided you have the proper plates, fillers, and hopper bottoms.

A JD 71 will work for corn, beans, but it will be tricky to plant large seeds like a pumpkin. The internal seed cut-off will probably do just that. The JD 33 planters are much less common. To see what a new 71 looks like go to Link .
