Does anyone know what size of Lustran plates I will need to plant sweet corn with a 290 John Deere planter? Thanks for your help!

Mike

Not a lot of commercial farmers use plate planters anymore but many still have a box or two full of plates in the back corner of their machine shed. You might ask around with folks in your area who have farmed since these planters were popular (they were up to the early '80s). Most would have no problem loaning you a bunch of plates to try out, if not just giving them to you. Plates for small round corn would probably be a good place to start.

No one knows what size plates you need for sweet corn. The seeds of different varieties are different sizes and shapes. Sometimes the seeds come with a recommendation on the bag. Usually you just have a bucket full of plates and see what fits right. If you have the seed on hand, Lincoln Ag lists the sizes of the pockets and the number of cell per plate, so you might be able to get close with that.
