Need info about sprigging

I just found out that our local conservation department is getting a couple of spriggers and will be renting them this year. I have a small bottom field (about 20 acres) that I would like to sprig in one of the hybrid bermudas, but I don't know the first thing about sprigging. Can anyone out there give me some basic info/pointers? Any help would be appreciated.

Ron, what Willy said is correct. The key is planting the sprigs in a moist seedbed, and then packing it down so it does not lose moisture. Renting the sprigger is just part of the job, finding someone to dig you fresh sprigs and getting them to the field is another thing. The conservation district should have information on the types of bermudagrass that is adapted to your area. Here in Central Texas, the most common types are coastal, Tifton 85, and Jiggs. I have heard of Ozarka (I believe) up north into OK and Missouri, that may be better suited for you.

Sprigging is digging the roots of grass and then planting them in a Good MOIST seedbed,planting can be done with a manure spreader and scattering them on the ground and litely disking them in or using a planter and planting them in rows 2 or 3 feet apart and when it comes up it will cover the middles. If you have bottom land Jiggs bermuda grass would be your best choice but I am not sure how far north it can handle the cold winters.
