I been looking for a JD 33 vegtable planter for sometime can"t seem to find one anywhere I was looking at my 71 flexi manuals they made a vegtable seed attachment for the 71 it looks like the seed metering system from a 33 I called the local deere dealer the parts are still available a bit pricy though you can also still get the depth control bands for the double disk openers I thought these might be needed planting vegtable seed you guys think this would make a good planter I have a couple of spare 71 units that came with my big planter I could use. I wanna put this on a one point fast hitch behind my farmall 140

The 71's will handle much larger seeds than the 33 will. The maximum seed size that the 33 will plant is about 3/16" diameter (tomato, lettuce, celery, etc). Many commercial seeds this size are coated to make them round and easier to meter accurately. The vegetable hopper attachment for the 71 uses the same seed plates as the 33 (which by the way are completely different than the standard Deere plates). So, with a 71 with both regular and vegetable hoppers you could plant just about anything. Deere does make regular plates that can handle seeds like beans, cukes, melons, onions, pumpkins, and other veggies. It is important to have the right filler ring for many of these specialized plates.

The 71s will work fine. I use 70s for everything that is not transplanted. Depth bands are a must. If you need plates for small seeds, try Lincoln Ag.

Kip: Those Deere model 71 units will work well for all vegetable seeds. You will also find that mounted planter will perform well behind the 1 point fast hitch. On a small 2 row unit that hitch will give you much better depth control than any 3 point. I have a Deere 246 planter with one point fast hitch.

I think a 71 would work good for vegetables. They used to use them for beets around here and they are a very fine seed. I used to have a set of depth bands around here I would sell cheap. I will look for them if you are interested.
