Homemade chipper shredder

hi all. im looking at making a wood chipper shredder so when i clean up brush i can get ride of the left overs. ive heard of people making them outta old forage harvesters and taking out every other knife. do these work well? does any have any ideas? anyone every made one? the biggest diameter of wood would probably be 2.5 inches or less. let me know of any advice. thanks in advance.

The feed rolls spin about 10 times too fast for one reason.

Its your life but they are not designed for wood. Thats how lot of people get hurt,seen those knive fly out even whiloe chopping silage no way would I want to be standing around it sticking sticks int it wondering what s goint to happen,rent you a chipper or just burn it

Please listen to the other posts and let this idea go. A neighbor did this a few years ago, he was grinding trees and heard a funny noise, opened the machine and one of the forage knives flew out and hit him in the head. Whereupon he spent the rest of his life in a "managed care" situation. It is not worth it. Shop around and find a used chipper from a utility company or something. Ben

I have one I made from an old single row New Holland forage harvester. It worked very well behind my JD A. If you want you can email me for better description or pictures. Also worked for mulching a bank with old hay!

Dont know about making one out of a piece of farm equipment but, it would be the same principal as what is called a whisper chipper. The ones that are out there are called "chuck and duck" chippers. I've used them and u can get hurt or chipped into shreds real fast. Vermeer is a drum feed that has alot of safty featchures built in. Better safe than sorry.

I am clearing an old farm that went back to nature, whatever is too small for firewood got piled, but the brush piles got too big and I started renting/buying chippers

finally bit the bullet and got a real brush honest to goodness chipper, old Vermeer 1600 with 6cyl ford on it

when some of the larger stuff goes thru that 300cu is really working, the disc is very heavy and the chipping chamber is too, Vermeer did that for a good reason

Vermeer northeast has good pictures of their used equipment, please go with a machine designed for the job

It works until the person feeding a jammed branch gets sucked into the forage harvester. Same phenomenon as farmers loosing hands in combine corn headers.

What are you planning to put it on? The size tractor, 540 or 1000pto and catorgory hitch will help us determine what would work well for you. I have seen a few home made ones but took quite some ponies to turn if you have the ponies would fill you in.

Doug, Im no forager man by any means, but that sounds like a major come apart waiting to happen.
If someone else has done it I would stick with that, let them have it.
Watch sales and used eguip. papers, pick one up from a tree company. The money u spend will be well worth it if that forager ever came apart while you were feeding it

i have a d21 ac and a 970 case. d21 is 1000 rpm and 970 is 540. there are slim and few tree companys around my neck of the woods. and ive seen a few vermeers sell but they are usually so wore out i would not trust any part of them.
