Hello all,

What are the differences between the #5 and #7 JD sickle mowers? I have a JD 60 tractor and just finished restoring dad"s 24T baler and have just stated restoring grand dad"s JD sickle mower, just not sure what model it is....

Need Parts?( #5) there are somewhere between 1 & 5 in every ranch iron pile in this part of country. It was just about the only mower used here regardless of tractor brand. most went to swathers after the # 5 and now have gone to disc mowers.

Could you be confusing the No. 7 that is for the L series tractors with the No. 8 that is a semi mount and looks a lot like the No. 5 mower. On one of them, a #5 or #7 the caster wheel is offset while the other the caster wheel is in the middle of the frame. Cannot remember offhand what has what but I have both setting out in the field and is raining heavy now.

The #5 has the caster wheel offset to the right. #8 caster wheel is near the center rear.

Never heard of of a #7, but a #5 has a cast iron cover on the gear box with a raised leaping deere logo on it. Don't have a pic to attach.

I"ve never seen a picture of a #7, but in the Service Publications Catalog (22 Jan, 93) there is listed a 7, 7B, 7C, and 7D with only Parts Catalogs available at that time. I wonder if the #7s weren"t very popular? The #5 was made for well over 20 years and in various places is stated to be the "most famous sickle bar mower worldwide". Can you post a picture or list some casting numbers etc., to help with identification?
