Does anybody know if there is a way of working out an ideal speed for a snowblower? I have got an old snowblower lying around that Im sure I could use the only problem is that it doesn't have a gearbox on it. Idealy I would like to mount it on the back of a Fordson major.

Any help?

most 3 pt. tractor mounted ones are made to run at 540 or 1000 rpm. Most smaller ones are 540. You usually run them with the tractor running wide open, which is usually about the speed the pto = 540.

Go to any tractor dealer that is currently selling snowblower for their tractors and get the specs and take an average.

The tractor companies that sell blower attachements will have the following recomendations

Run the tractor in 1st gear (then find out how fast 1st gear is)
Run the tractor at X rpms

Etc etc etc...then figure out how to match that to your tractors specs...
