My New Holland 718 chopper is worn out. Who makes a small chopper? The JD,NH,Hesston are all to large for our operation. In my research I have found none of them make a small chopper anymore.

I run a Gehl 400 with my Oliver 1650, about 60 horsepower. Gehl 600's or 800's are good machines too. Do you use a one row or two row head?

We run a 338 two-row and a 330 two-row. He's got to chop some wheat for a guy this spring so we're searching for a hay head now.

Don't forget about Gehl, they make a good machine also. We use a 750 that has had who knows how many acres run through it. My boss bought it at a dealer, dairyman ran it for years then traded in. I've heard good things about JD choppers too.

You can still find good used 718 choppers. I know what your saying bout the 718. I had one when I first started farming. It worked good with my JD 830 2cyl tractor, but it wore out and I went to a 770 and a JD 4020 to run it. Now I'm using a 782 on my small dairy. I chop all of my feed to help justify the investment. I know that a few overseas companies make a small cut and blow chopper, but goood luck finding a new one in the US.

A larger harvester really does not require any more power to operate, and it will not wear as fast as a 718. The bigger harvesters will be limited in capacity to your HP. An 890 or 892 or evan a 900 N Holland would be an excellent investment. A 3 or 5 year old machine is really cheap. The big boys will not buy used. Replace the moving wear parts and the machine will go for a long time Do not be afraid to buy away from your area if you can not find locally what you need. Rebuilding a forage harvester is just straight wrench work, no rocket science involved. And in the future if you acquire a larger tractor, you will not put the forage harvester in the wagon with the silage!!!
