Bought a 7' chisel plow to use on my 75 hp four wheel drive tractor and tried it out yesterday. The 7 shanks plowing 8 to 9 inches deep seem to be too much as I have to go in a really low gear. I don't want to plow any shallower, so I've decided to remove 2 of the shanks. Would I be better off to take off the end shanks and only plow 5' wide, or remove 2 of the middle shanks and reposition the remaining ones to be 18" apart instead of 12". Any comments appreciated.

Remove the end shanks, That is what I did when I had mine. A 2 bar Ford 7' 7 shank for a Ford 5000, could just handle it with that but for the Ford 4000 5 is all I could handle. Remember that when you move them wider that they cannot crack all the ground between them and without doing that it does not pay you to spent the work, also if the ground is wet then it will also not crack the ground but just mash a path thru as wide as the shovel. When I bought mine it had frame extensions made and extended to 20" and the first thing I did was junk those frame extensions and put it back to factory and remember that a disc-chisel at 15" spacing has to run a couple of inches deeper to acomidate the wider width spacing

I would remove the end shanks, but first I would plow like it is then cross it deeper.

Joe, Just drop off the two outside shanks for now. Leave the spaceing at 12 ins. Later on you may want to add them back for other operations. Like field cultivating with sweeps on instead of chiesel points.
Later,
John A.
