PLEASE IDENTIFY MY PLOW!!!!!!!!

I am in sort of the same boat. I bought an old used Ford 3 pt. 3-14" plow and I would like to identify it so I can get a manual or schematic drawings. I have never posted a pix here..hope it isn't too difficult. Do you need numbers as well? I think the plate may still be legible.

The plows I am most familiar with are IH. I have two plow books containing 65 different models of IH plows. If I single out the plows built prior to 1962, aprox 20 models of trailer and mounted plows, yet all used the same ground working tools. In 1962 IH made major changes in their plows. If I look at post 1962 plows, close to 45 models of mounted, semi-mounted and trailer plows, again they all used the same plow chief or super chief bottoms. However some features of the old plows remained.

I know John Deere had just as much variety as IH, thus you a going to encounter much the same trying to identify your plow. As I see it, it will be a whole lot easier to have you post a photo of your plow, rather than a 100 guys trying to post all the variations until you see your plow. Again, unless you are right on top of plow terminology, it is going to be damn hard to identify the plow by description. They do not have distinguishing features like tractors.

The beam numbers for the No. 5 are defined in a Green Magazine article from some years ago...they are as follows:

"439, 440 beam numbers...12", 14" two and three bottoms, 1916-1918"

"441 beam number.....14" rear beam for three bottoms only, 1916-1918"

Based on the above info, it looks like yours must be a 3-14" plow.

Then you get the other end of the spectrum, a guy come on here asking how to put a gear shift knob on a Farmall H. There are about 3 other threads going on the same subject at the time. So many folks just wont take the time to read anything. I regularly get 3 times as much knowledge as I give here everyday.

Just to give you an example of folks not reading, and just how reading can reap dividends. I once picked up a fellow farmer on my way to a farm meeting. From his house we proceeded to a highway I rarely traveled. As I turned onto this highway he warned me to watch my speed. He warned me a second time, and on the same breath said your too late they got you on the radar. He then advised me this highway had it speed limit reduced from 60 mph to 50 mph. I told him to keep his mouth shut while I talked with the officer.

I rolled down my window, officer wanted to see my lisence, etc. He then said, " Mr MacKay we clocked you at 58 mph." I said, "so what's the problem." He said, " Problem is speed limit is 50 mph." I said, "Since when." He said, "Since they opened the new 4 lane and wanted folks to use it rather than this highway." I said, "Fine but if you look at my address this is a road I rarely travel and if it hadn't been for picking up my friend I wouldn't be here this morning and besides the speed limit is not posted. I came on this highway from 24 and there is no speed limit sign between there and here. If there is a sign it is beyond where I turned on. He said, "No there is a speed limit sign by the park." I said, "Sir that sign says it is illegal dump garbage on the highway." He said, " Mr MacKay, I'm going to let you off, it is such a welcome surprise to know somebody actually reads signs." So friends, it always pays to read more than you write. Bet that surprises you guys, you think all I do is type.

The picture I posted is a little small and is a scan of a previous photocopy, so it's not great.

You need to get someone to snap a digital pic of YOURS and post it here then someone will help you ID it if possible. You might want to take a good hard look at the entire plow for some other clues.
If their is any paint maybe you can see the remnants of the model number on the beam? I have a few plows sitting around here and might help. If nothing else, describe it in great detail.
