Does anyone know if a 8hp single cylinder engine will run a hammer mill to grind cob corn?

Possibly only if it is a 6" mill and you feed it ONE ear at a time, 18 Horse John Deere on 10" David Bradley mill could not handle ear corn but would grind hay

Dad used first an Allis UC for years on the Belt for our IHC 10" Hammermill. Then he got and MM "U" for the same Hammer Mill. Two Shovelers could keep the Hopper full but could not run out of power with either Tractor. Early around 1940-46 he had a Sandwich 3HP Hit and Miss Engine which he ran a small Burr mill with and also a Buzz Saw for Fire wood. When I Farmed I had a Gehl feed mill with a 10" Hammer Mill and a AC 190 Gas and you could not over load that Tractor either. My point is it takes some strong Horsepower to run a big Hammer Mill but a small one may be run with lower horse Power, may be. Try it out and see for your self. A 40 H.P. Tractor will do a good job on a 10" Belt powered Hammer Mill. A Power Take Off Mill may be run with little less H.P.

8 hp will not run a hammer mill, but it will run a 6" 8" or maybe 10" Burr mill.

I've got an old hammermill with a blower on it, and it will drag down a 40 hp tractor if it starts to plug up. You didnt mention if yours had a blower or not, but an 8hp engine seems optimistic. With that said, the best way to find out is to obviously try it. If you already own both, then you arent going to really be out anything but your time for setting it up. That's half the fun of farming.

That depends one the hammer mill. If its a full size one then no. If its a little one say about a foot square yes. I have both sizes of them and the big one 8HP would do any thing more then turn it.

Hi Chester

Normally I would say no.... depends how big the mill is and how slow you are willing to feed it.....

We used a Farmall M years ago on the farm.....Don SW Ohio
