How much to pull with 62hp

I currently own a 62 hp ford tractor(5600 and 5000) and was woundering how wide of a field cultivator or how many bottoms that i should be pulling

4-14's or 3-16's. Might need 2 sets of weights & calcium.

We used to pull 3x16's with a 5000. We pulled a 12' IH cult., I believe just like Paul has pictured. In those days deep tillage was the thinking. We pulled it just as deep as we could and it was a load. I would still pull a 12 footer, but not as deep and go faster. Soils vary alot and you'll need to consider you soil conditions. But I think a 5000 could handle these impements in some gear in most soils.

Hi Kawookie,
Just some more info for you to think about. We pulled a 14' field cultivator & plowed with 3-16's with Dad's 58hp Case LA (8,000#). Soil is Muscatine-Tama. Heavy black soil with lots of heavy clay on the hillsides(suck your boots off clay). Eastern Iowa.

Kawookie,

Concerning the number of bottoms you can pull, we have pretty heavy clay soil here in Middle Tennessee. The rule of thumb here is 25 hp. per bottom on a moldboard plow. Based on that, you'd probably want to pull two 16" bottoms or three 14's. If the soil has been worked consistently, or if you don't plow too deeply, you could probably pull three 16's.

Depending on type of soil and type of cultivator, I'd guess 10 - 14 feet. Most older cultivators have a +/- 12' center section so you can add or subtract extensions/shanks to suit. HTH.

A lot depends on your soil and how your tractor is weighted-duals?

I have a little 16 or 17ft one I tried to pull last year (see picture at bottom) with a 52hp Massey 255-loose black soil-no duals. I was running about 2 1/2" deep. It pulled it but it was really too much-tractor was wanting to overheat. Your would probably have done ok.

However if your ground has more clay or hills or is not loose you may want to go a little smaller.

What do you call horsepower? The older slow-revving tractors seemed to have cart horses fitted compared to a lot of newer tractors ponies.
We had an International B450, rated at 55 engine hp at 1500rpm, max torque 205lb/ft. We traded it in for an International 674, 78 engine hp at 2400 rpm, max torque 188lb/ft. Suffice to say ye olde B450 could pull the rear end off the 674.A The Massey Ferguson 175 and the contemporary IH 634 were both rated at the same engine hp but the International had more pull.

Do you mean "more pull" or they would lugg down and pull harder? 55HP is 55HP no matter if the engine is turning 1250 rpm or 6000rpm. No matter if it's gasoline, diesel or electric either.

What I mean is by 'more pull' is when you say, hit a tougher spot when say plowing,or going up a hill with a trailer load of wheat the tractor would have more torque that is "not give up so easily under load". I can remember going to The Smithfield Agricultural Show in London on the train, I got talking to a farmer who told me that he had both a 78hp IH and a 75 hp Renault. He used both tractors for corn carting at harvest time. To get to his farm from some of his fields there was a fairly steep hill. Both tractors had identical trailers, but with the International he said he would have to change down a couple of gears to get to the top of the hill, wheras with the Renault ( 3 hp less ) he could leave her in top gear.(both tractors had similar top speeds) Torque is far more important than horsepower.

Even if a 50HP tractor had a torque rise higher than a 60HP tractor. The 60 HP tractor will still outwork the 50HP tractor by 1.2 times every hour. HP is work per hour, torque is lbs pull. Speed is distance per hour. All different measurements that mean different things.
