Coyotes killed one of what would have been my best calves. Anybody got a recipe to get rid of coyotes?

Don't you just love the crap the local game people try to feed us about how the coyotes only hunt rabbits, mice and the sick or crippled deer. I was watching the mens Channel on Dish the other day and a guy filmed a coyote pack take down a healthy buck. Here in Pa. the Game Commission has a season on them, so they can collect some extra money. Pa. hunter numbers are down so they have got to come up with money to support their system. You know just like an addict. Next it will be a cottontail or squirrel tags. What a joke.

As a hunter I would suggest that you might try calling up the local gun club or sporting good store. There are usualy shooters that would love to call the coyotes into range and test their skills. I use a portable blind, predator call and .22 rifle. You can call them in close enough and lay them down within 50 yards in the right conditions. Just make sure that the hunters know that the permission to hunt is limited to certain hunters as well as dates. There are times that too much is taken for granted in these circumstances.

Have you ever seen in person an animal die a slow death from anti-freeze ? I have seen a number of dogs die this way from careless misuse of antifreeze . My wife used to be a vet tech . Anti freeze is NOT the way to do it . But if you don't have a soul go ahead and do it that way . God will sort you out ...Randy

If you don't want to hunt them let someone hunt them, then call your local game warden and he will put you in touch with a trapper. Here in missouri you could get a bunch of trappers for free you wouldn't have to pay some one to do it. Don't put out antifreeze that is a cruel thing to do. You have no control over what drinks or eats it and a coyote is real smart. Sombodys dog will probally eat it first. Your pretty sorry if you poison them, my 2 cents.

i like m nut idea we have highland cattle but i'm sure others would be the same way i think these girls are born hating dogs , they will not let a dog on their side of the fence even the yearling heifers will chase them . they don't even like our dogs when our dogs are outside near the cows they are all watching them

Their are cyanide traps that you bait for coyotes. Basically you drive them in the ground, and than there is a spring loaded arm attached to it where the cyanide is placed. You bait it with some meat, and when the coyote tugs on the bait it releases the spring releasing cyanide powder into the face of the coyote which kills it. I'm pretty sure they require at least a restricted pesticide license, and than possibly a special endorsement for animal control, but that may vary from state to state.

Unless you saw it and if your calf was large enough to be called one of your best its unlikely that it was coyotes. Coyotes may have been cleaning up but I'm not sure they made the kill.
Don't be foolish enough to put out anti-freeze as some people advise. Have a good hunter take care of the problem. Not just some gun happy dude that all he knows is how to load and pull the trigger...Good luck...

20 hunters with 4x4 pickups,2 atv's,cb radios,good pack of fox hounds,12 gauge 870s with 00 buck shot and a full tank of gas.That formula has work for me for twenty years.LOL.Good luck.

We got to having a real problem a few years ago. 6 of us (representing 3000 adjoining acres) went together and hired a trapper. He put out snares, killed over 100 that winter. It wasnt cheap, $1000 each for his services but he totally elimnated our porblem. Since then I've seen 3 total. Figured that $1000 was cheaper than the fine for antifreeze if I got caught.

You can adopt burros (donkeys) from the dept of land management for next to nothing. The jacks will be cut and all of them have health papers before adoption. there are gov sale barns scattered around the states. you can go to their web page and get registered to buy and it will show where the closest sale to you will be. also sometimes you can find them cheap form someone who thought it would be a nice pet until the kids got tired of it.
We have 8 mules and they are just like the donkeys as far as dogs go. Our blue heelers learn real quick not to go in the mule pasture, they will stand at the gate when i feed but wont dare cross the line. i did get to see them all after a coyote one time, if i had been able to tape it it would have been the 10000 dollar winner. i almost felt sorry for the coyote by the time he got out.
if you dont want to run a donkey or mule, the antifreeze or sponges soaked in bacon grease will do the job

You wont believe how well a donkey repels any coyote wolf and if you have a family dog you better keep it away from the donkey. They are fearless and if you have two donkeys you might be able to rent them out.

I am thinking I can count and soak small pieces of spoiled meat in antifreeze, tie a string to them so I can go back and collect what they might not find if necessary. Will soaking meat work? How Long? Will anything make it more potent? How far will the coyote get before it dies? Any tips?
Hunters don't seem to have much success with coyotes here.

Antifreeze can be soaked into meat as a marinade but you must be clean about. Human scent on it and the only to touch it will be local pets (be cautious of neighbors animals).

It kills in about 1-4 days. Where the coyote ends up is your guess. Den hunting is very effective if you have the luxury of time to locate. Not sure of your terrain so this is optional. Also it is highly frowned upon.

Calling is effective by using pre-recorded calls but check local laws before hand. Calls with a .223 or .22-250 can be effective to a degree.

Also consider a good dog or two that can be with you and around livestock. Just be cautious as coyotes will gang up and kill a good dog by luring him away.

One other note of caution -
As we all know nature abhors a vacum, so if you decimate the coyotes something else will take their place and generally this is more coyotes as they breed to meet capacity. As a kid we "cleaned" them out only to have more than originally had.

My Brother in Law tells the story about a neighbor of his Dads. He called the conservation agent, as they walked across his farm the agent kept saying not much you can do, but don't put out anti-freeze. They love it and it will kill them deader than a hammer. He said in the walk the agent just kept repeating this. He put out anti-freeze and got rid of them. Of course other animals will be killed also. I got rid of a bunch of cats this way but had it where nothing but could get to it beside the cats.

If you are looking to poison, how do you feel about non-target species deaths? Truly, the most humane and most effective means is to allow a few hunters out in the evening or mornings to take care of them. Doesn't cost you anything. You are not finding barn cats or the family pet dead from eating the poison. Plus coyotes are relatively wary and are smart enough to avoid most scents they are unfamiliar with. I takes a fair bit on knowledge to trap them. Go to the local gun shop and find out if anyone in the area hunts predators and give them an invitation to take care of your problem. If you are worried about them too close to buildings or anything just limit where you will allow them to go. Any hunter with half a brain knows not to crew up a good thing and they'll listen and you'll have someone to take care of groundhog holes come summer as well.

Even a few cows that hate them work well. I have about 6 in my herd that go crazy when a dog or coyote come in the pasture. Will kick and tramp that animal instantly. My dad, brother, and I can work with the cows fine. Very quiet around us, but NO DOGS ALLOWED! We hear coyotes every night, sometimes on three sides of the farm at once, but have not lost a calf to coyotes in 20 yrs.

Markay, A 223, with a Zias scope shooting a Ballistic tip round. or Any other rifle/scope combo with a Hot load.
Contact the County and find out who you local Gov. Trapper and get his help. Hope this helps.

If you havn't got time to shoot them. Try running a Llama or a donkey with your herd. Also make sure there is no dead stock or hunting leftovers on your farm.
