My FIL had (bought new) a 4-14 #16 IH plow that pulls hard,no I mean HARD! When he first got it he used a 560 to pull it. It didn't go very well so he had the engine overhauled with "big pistons". Still pulled hard.It only plowed about 500 acres and he parked it when the semi-mounted plows came along. Fast forward about 40 years to his estate sale. A friend of mine buys it and thinks he'll show that plow who is boss by hooking it to his nice 1206. 3rd gear TA, on low side is all this tractor will do with it( sometimes you might get the TA in the high side but not for long). Heck, his M with 3-14 #8 can keep up with the 1206. What could be wrong?? The decal on the mouldboard says Super Chief, and there is a bolt with an arrow at the bottom of the landslide that is set in the "normal" position.When it is in the ground it pulls straight, runs level, and does a nice job, just pulls hard.

Blu,

I've always said that the IHs were the hardest pulling plow ever.

All ya can do is to make sure you have the lathes sharpened, hit the field at the right time as far as moisture goes and feed the horsepower to 'em. :>)

I have a 3-16 #16 that I pull with my SM (engine out of a 450) and yep, it can be a bear. Soil and all that matter but the big thing is the fact it will plow 16" deep.

Play with the depth and he will find what works. Also are you sure it has 14" bottoms? I might be wrong but I think it should be 16" or 18".

I have pulled mine with a 706 and a 1586 and it can make the 1586 have chest pain at full depth.

It could be the ground you are in, or..is it really Scoured well..??

If it does not have a real "Soil Shine", it is gonna pull hard...

Is the rear "Heel" running real hard on the bottom of the furrow..?? (or rear wheel)..

Is the front share cutting a wider slice than the others..??

What kind of soil are you plowing, and what was grown there this year..??

Some plows just pull harder then others. How deep are you plowing. This is a trailing plow with trip rope or a hyd. cyl?

More details.... the plow was originaly used in timber soil that shouldn't pull that hard. The fields are FLAT to slightly rolling. When it was new (well before I came into the picture) I assume (yeah, I know) it was bright and shiney. When we used it 2 years ago I sanded on it for a day with a "flap" wheel to get it close to bright and at the end of the weekend with the 1206 the bottoms looked great. This is a pull type plow with hydraulic lift. We try to plow about 7 to 8 inches deep. The weekend of the 1206 on the plow, a Case LA ran a 4 bottom pull type and matched the 1206 round for round. Thanks for your comments. We are planning to pull this plow this spring and haven't decided on a tractor for it yet. 1206, 1466, 1468??

It seems to me there must be some mechanical problem with that plow. I have an old Model 16 3-14 pull plow around here yet. I used to pull it 8" deep in fairly flat silt loam (timber) soils with an old JD model 70 gas. I mostly pulled it in 3rd gear. That would be almost 4 1/2 mph. Once in a while, in a more clay type soil, I would have to drop to second gear, which was 3 1/2 mph. My old plow is not in super shape, by any means. In fact, I often pulled it with the coulters off. I'd get someone to plow with that plow and, then, stand on the ground and watch your plow very closely as it goes by. Some thing does not seem right with that plow.

oleblu, it might be interesting to try and acquire an original shop set-up manual for that plow, not just the owners manual, but the manual that the dealer used to assemble the plow when it was delivered. It might just be that the plow was never adjusted properly.

i agree with rusty that plow has major problem
you might need to tear it apart and rebuild it from start . is something sprung ? i used to help a friend drove ford sos 5000 with turbo pulled 4-14 a no. 8 or no. 16 had a harrow on it about 5 1/2 6 miles per hour i would like to sit on tractor and turn some dirt but mine is considersd highly erodable the " boys in town " don't even want me to use a chisel plow with twisted points
