Rusty plowshares

I'm looking at a 3 bottom Kverneland plow to use in clay and loam soils. It's in good shape but has been sitting outside for about 6-8 years. It looks like the shares have some pitting, that I don't think would scour off in use. Will this interfere with cutting a clean furrow or use alot more power?

Dad always said that to clean up a rusty moldboard is use a soft red brick and get into it with your arm. I have used a hand grinder with a fine grit pad on it, and then head for the nearest sod or hay field that you want to plow up.

Walter - I don't know how much plowing you're looking at ----- but ---- older Kverneland shares have been obsolete for years and newer models are VERY pricey ! If the plow frame is round (as opposed to square)the shares for that model are the obsolete ones. Other than that, it won't take much to polish them up, and it's hard to beat the plowing job those plows do.

You bet it will affect the plowing .If it is severly pitted they may be beyond salvage. If you are going to use it ,get it scoured before you take it to the field .I happen to have an old R.R. right-of- way near me with a lot of cinders in the old bed .They work great on rust but won't get out the pits.I have heard that taking one to a gravel pit or gravel bar will work also . Get it shined before you go to the field or be ready to get on and off to clean the moldboards a lot.
