I am in the process of refurbishing an old JD 246 planter. I am having a problem with it kicking out more than one seed at a time, sometimes as many as 4-5. I know these planters can be set up to hill plant which does exactly that, multiple seeds per cycle, however I don"t have it set up to hill plant so that"s not the problem. I am thinking it has something to do with the seed tube valves. I do have a manual but it is pretty vague and not a lot of information about the valves. Do any of you guys have any ideas with regard to this problem? Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

It has been many a year since we had the 246 planter but I have 4 190 and 2 490 planters here to rebuild that have that same valving setup in, I was thinking of the 495 planter that has a different valve settup in. When I get these 290's rebuilt I am going to remove that valve completly as for drill planting it will do nothing but cause trouble, it would only be supposed to work with the hill drop setting as that valve is to shut of the flow of seed from the plate and then open for the hill then close again to collect the seed for the next hill then repeat the cycle again .To fix your problem you will have to completly dismantle the planter starting by taking the shoe off then taking theshanp off and seperating it to get in to the seed tube spout and valve to rebove and you will probably fine out it is rusted up so the valves cannot work, you will need to get everything inside working free as well as all the control rods from that hill drop control shaft on the front of the planter. If I was wanting to use the planter (And I would not do any hill droping) I would start out by removing everything to do with the hill droping starting with the cross rod in front thru the rods that connect that to the valves in the shank and the valve parts on the valve shank and put it all back together without any of the valve parts as they are not needed for drill planting corn or beans. That way you have nothing to get stuck, filled with dirt or rust out to cause anymore trouble, you would not even need the lorew valve and spout in for the planter to work. Other than the the tongue cut-off and the knocker wheel in the hopper not working there is nothing else to do if you have the correct seed plates and corect and not wore out hopper bottom and the hopper bottom is either flat or can be turned over with a narrow grove for larger corn seed or a wide grove for sowing different rates of beans. If that floor plate is wore it will cause rate problems.

Thanks Leroy. It sounds like you have a lot of experience with these old planters. I will try to remove those valves like you have suggested. I have no use for the hill drop feature, and it sounds like that is the only purpose for the valves. Are you saying to remove the entire seed tube from the planter to be able to remove the valves? I looked and am not sure how that would be accomplished. Any further imput would be appreciated.

Do you have the manual with the parts list in it? My manual is OM-B39-1253 so it would have been printed in Dec., of 53 and it does have the parts list and that is where you need to look to find out how the valves are. To me it is not that old of a planter as I still use a 69 model 494A planter and altogether I have here that 494A, a 58 model 494, 57 model 494, the 2 490, 4 290, a 999 horse planter and a 450 that is the first 4 row planter built by Deere in late 30's to spring of 42, and I have parted out several at the scrap yards.

There are no seed tube valves in a 246 planter, just the seed knocker parts on the plate and it sounds like you have a large kernal plate and small size seed with multiple seeds getting in each cell

Thanks for the reply Leroy. I have a manual for the 246 planter and it shows the valves in the manual. My planter has those valves on it. I have the right size plate called for on the seed corn bag.

There is another funny thing going on here. It is a two row planter and one side sends out almost twice as many kernels as the other side. Same plate size and same seed corn in both hoppers.

Oh well, the thing's about 50 or 60 years old. Maybe she's just seen her best days. I sure would like to get her working right and not have to put her out to pasture. I'm not as good as I once was either, but I hope my wife don't put me out to pasture.

I used to have a 290 JD Planter and while I do not remember Settings I do know that you have to use the correct Planter Plate for the size Seed you are planting. For instance a small round Seed would use a different Planter Plate than a Med. Flat Seed would. Also there is a Setting that would accumulate 2-3 Seeds for a one time drop such as in Hill Dropping. A set up for a Check Wire would do almost the same but the Check Wire determined the Seed Drop location. The 290/490 Series JD. Planter could be set to Drill, Hill Drop or Check Row by making the right Settings to it.If your Planter is set to Hill Drop it seems to be working right and I would check the Seed Plate Recomendations,Of course if yours is an Air Drop? *?""[@#%%[
