Any suggestions besides get a bigger tractor??? Im sure there is something out there my oliver could handle....

Don't know where you are at but a dealer near me has a Hesston 5530 which makes like a 600lb bale. It's an older model, but it looks like it'd work well on an older lower hp tractor.

No idea on H.P. of your tractor, however I use a New Idea 4x4 baler with a 45 H.P. Massey. The bales are only 5-600 lbs. TRactor has a two stage clutch ground is hilly. Power is not a factor, wouldn't mind better brakes though.

Sticks in my head that the manual for the 605F called for a minimum 65 PTO HP. I don't know my Oliver's that well. Do you have that much HP?

John

You have enough HP for most MFG's 4x4, 5x4 & Vermeer 505 models. You may be able to make the 6x5 balers work but you are deficient HP to really process 6x5 bales. You could handle a 6x5 closed throat baler but they will cause premature aging if you think you can bale any hay over 18% moisture.

Hay, I can't agree with you 100%. I use a Super 88 Oliver to pull a NH 850 which puts out one of the biggest bales out and it just plays with that baler. But it also does run very strong and I have no idea what some one else may have done with that engine. It may be stock but it may not be but it sure does a good job of it and never lacks the power to run it.

I used a Vermeer 504C & 403F with my AC-WD (35 hp) for years. The Vermeer balers allow one to turn the gear box to provide much more torque. Wiht this change, the baler turns slowly, but the small hp tractors have all the "grunt" one needs to bale. I still use the 403F. Makes a 3 ft wide bale, and is a well built machine. The newer version is a 503- still 3ft wide but the potential for 5 ft tall bales. Neither the 403 or 503 are made any more, but parts have been no problem for the 403.

I have a Vermeer 504G that makes a 4x5 bale and I pull it with a 350 farmall. On hills it would be a little light and and a little short on HP in heavy hay it is all it wants.

Just to add more about my baler and my S88, when I got the baler I was told my 77 would pull it but it wouldn't really do it unless every thing was just right, but it did. Then I tried a farmall 450 and it did better but still not good enough but the S88 well it does very well.

Hesston makes a small round baler too. Can't think of the number tho. My cousin runs his with a 77.

My Super 77 can't run my 605F. I tried. Once.

However, your 88 should run a smaller round baler well, I'd look for a 4 by 5 or6 foot baler, you can make 4x4 up to the size bale you can handle with it.

I had an Case International 8420. I can be used with a 40 horse power tractor and only used one set of hydraulic remotes. I used it for two years and was happy with it. It makes bales that are narrower and taller than a 4 by 4.

I pull a NH 850 with a S88 Oliver and it just plays with the 850. The 850s can be had cheap now days. I know of a place that has 2 or 3 of them for $500 each. But they make a big round bale 5-1/2 by 5-1/2. There a chain type baler by the way. I had the same problem I just could do the square bales any more because of a bad back.

Super 88 is plenty for some 4X5 balers. The Krone & M&W and I'm sure others don't need a lot of power. The ones mentioned are supposed to make a soft core bale that is very tightly wrapped on the outside. I've been using an M&W 1500 for last 15 years with a 55 hp tractor and it never opens the govenor. Very solid bale, holds it round shape all winter. I think the book says 45 hp tractor .
