Shop and shop and keep shopping. There are deals out there if you watch for them. I used one one summer and loved it, knew I had to have one, problem was the price. I was willing to spend 8 or 9K but the decent 2200# lift ones were about double that. I still looked at it as a luxury then and refused to spend that kind of $$. I stumbled on the one I got (1845C Case, 98 model, under 2000 hrs, never rained on) off a horse arena that had sold for $6500. I paid for it on the spot, never even heard it run. Been a great machine, added tracks to it and dont know how I ever lived without it. I used to put about 300 hrs on one tractor a year and 150 on each of the other two. Now, its 200 on one, 150 on one, and 50 on the other. The 200 hrs a year on the skid steer replaces the replaces that and saves 100 hrs a year to boot. What I saw as a luxury is now the second most valuable piece of equipment I own.

If you only have $5000, most likely you need to forget about a skid loader. I friend did find a decent old Owatonna that would have the power you need. The problem is that it is too light. For $5000 you would be better off buying an IH 560 or JD 3020 with a loader.

mgm, Like the others have said you will need to at least double the purchase price to get a machine of any quality at all. Case in point.....
A friend of mine picked up a 99 model 753 diesel Bobcat in mid 2000 with only 200 hrs on it. This machine came off their rental line. He gave about 12K for it. He traded in the most wore-out 1980 model 453 gas, you ever saw. They gave him $4500 for it. So go visit with the dealer of skidsteer loaders you like, perhapse they have a rental line, So maybe you can get on the list for a good one comming off the line.
My friend got his for just under $7K, in cash after he got them to take his ol wore out Bobcat.
IMO...One he##-of-a-trade. OBTW.... It went back to the dealer about a month ago first time since he got it. It now has close to 2500 hrs on it now.
He uses it on his Tree farm.
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

mgm: I bought two new skid loaders during my farming days. I don't think I'd have the courage to buy a used one. Problem today, they have added so many bells and whistles, new ones cost big bucks. My loaders were 1700# lift capacity and in the 70s about the same money as 30 hp tractor. I suppose that is probably still true. My loaders cost aprox $7,500. I expect they are over $30,000. today.

With a new one you are assured of 10,000 to 15,000 hours of trouble free service. These machines take an awful beating on construction, it will be bad enough farming. I put more hours per year on my skid loaders than my tractors, that is each in both cases.

Many machines to choose from. Some are hand controls, some are hand and foot controls. Look at the manuals to determine lift capacity. Then drive each of those that can do your job- hand and foot machines. I have a Gehl 4625SX, rated to lift 1350 lbs. You need something bigger. Mine has given great service for the 7 years I've had it, but is tippy on big bales. It can move 5x6 bales from a NI baler, but not raise them much. Works fine stacking big squares three high with the grapple fork. I like hand controls- it's a personal thing. I like bracing my feet on the floor for stability. Mine is about a '95 model, worth about $8500 now. If 5 grand is your budget, unlikely you'll find something in your price range to do the job.

Don't want to rain on your parade, but I don't think you will find anything decent for $5,000. I say this, because I tried the same thing. I bought one for $5,500, and it ended up to be pure junk. The first dealer that would take it in trade was a Mustang dealer, traded it for a 5 year old model 960, and it has been a flawless machine. I use it daily, and do nothing but routine service and put in fuel. I had to give $4,000 to boot, so I have $9,500 into the machine. That was back in 2000. I think you may want to think more in the $8000-$10,000 range if you want one ready to go to work. If you don't mind repair, well then that's different.

I have to agree. A $5000 machine will be pretty worn out. Need to look at $10,000 machine or up. ALso need to look at 50-60 hp or more to get one heavy enough to handle 1500 lbs. bales and be stable.
