I got a Massey #3 twine baler at auction, Wisconsin THD power. The owner said it had been sitting 40+ years, and the plunger was stuck. I finally got the plunger to slide, but after about 15 minutes the side of the chute is too hot to touch. There is no wear anywhere on the baler, so it's worth some work. Any suggestions? I've loosened the adjusting bolts on the sides and it makes no difference. The THD is tired enough I need everything sliding easy.

Jerry: loosen all adjusting bolts disconnect the plunger drive arm, make sure the needles are down! put a bar in the bale latch so its sown also, grease the chamber real good. Pull the plunger box out. you will find shim rails that the plunger rides on sounds like what has happened is rust has swelled the shims, and rails, you will probly need to replace them and they are not cheap! Bought a #3 stuck up been their, done that!!! Can put you in touch with a MF dealer that knows the #3's and is reasonable on parts. Let me know if I can Help have Mf #3 parts book! Your welcome!!!!!

Thank you both for your advice. I didn't know there were adjusting bolts on the bottom, and I've been wondering where the shims are and how to remove them. It is VERY well oiled from all the loosening work, so I'll have to put on a body condom and crawl down in there and remove a shim or two.

There should be shims beneath both upper runners. Just extend the plunger as far rearward as it will go, loosen the upper runners and pull out a shim from each side.

Get yourself a 1/2" wrench and some Blaster and find the bolts on top and underneath the bale chamber, on both sides. There should be at least three for each runner. Loosen these a few turns, and then fully extend the plunger to were the connecting rod is parallel with the bale chamber. You should find a few shims between the upper plunger runners and the bale chamber. Take out a shim on each side, tighten your bolts back up and you should be good to go.

I bought a MF # 9 , about 8 years ago that was seized as well. There could be chaff, rust, dirt etc jammed between the rails and side. My flywheel can be turned by hand full cycle, and is powered my my TO35 gas.If it wasn"t for the 2 stage clutch the momentum would push me 50 feet. I would give it a good pressure wash and oil the chute and chains well.
