I need to run electric to my barn. The barn is about 150 feet from the house. I'm thinking of getting a King Kutter middle buster / subsoiler from my local TSC. Does anyone know if this may work for making my trench?

The line will probably be buried in conduit so I should be fine with running it about 16 inches deep. Also, will I need to wait until the ground thaws? I'm near central Ohio so it's not super cold like some of your areas...

Thanks for all your help!

BOB

The National Electrical Code requires burial depth of 24" minimum for most applications.

Thanks for your responses. I guess you confirmed my fear. I'll have to rent a ditch witch again. I was trying to get past spending $200 again without having another implement when I was finished. I'm sure you're right and thanks for keeping me straight!

I'm thinking Steve is right, 16" isn't deep enough. That aside, I've never seen one of the KK type advertised at more than 12" deep. It might work to make a trench with the middle buster. It'd be much easier and probably cheaper to just go rent a trencher. A 16" deep gulley from a middle buster isn't going to be easy to close in, or fun to drive/mow/walk over for a long time.

You better check with the local power co. or electrical insp. I always dug the trench 36" deep and this gave me 30" to top of conduit. Also, you might want to have someone with a trencher or rent a trencher to dig for you. And they would know if the ground is too froze to dig.
